Hello,
I have my plex media server on windows 10 machine and my media on synology nas(purchased nov 2019). We watch our media majorly on firestick now and have been observing some buffering lately towards the end of the movie or sometimes in between. I am always hesitant to update the server when it gives me a notification on the browser when i am updating titles.
The windows 10 machine is wired from the router(there is a switch in between) but wired and also the NAS is wired to the router. Firestick is on wifi. Any suggestions or any settings to be changed??
There are a number of small annoying bugs with FireTV stick, quite a few threads on the forum if you do a search.
How is the WiFi reception on your firestick? I have 2 and the one in my bedroom (where the router is located) is fine on WiFi, but the one out in my Home Theatre room struggled as the WiFi wasnât as strong.
Amazon sell an ethernet adapter for the TireTV Stick that works really well and is surprisingly inexpensive (I paid approx. $20 AUD delivered)
i mean i watch sports on the same thing, and like one of yours mine is also away from the router may be i will connect to the hub closer and give it a try. Many people were talking about the ethernet adapter not making a lot of difference so i have not purchased one yet. Please let me know of any other posts talking about the same issue, want to look at their solutions offered. Thank you !!!
Adding an ethernet adapter is not going to improve things much if your WiFi was good to start with, but more than other devices the FireTV Stick does seem to struggle a little without really good WiFi, guessing but itâs a pretty small compact unit so perhaps the antenna size is sacrificed. If you have an ethernet port handy to the TireTV stick itâs not a big cost to buy one and try it out.
Just filtering on the Fire-TV tag will find a lot of issues that many are experiencing

Do you guys have any idea on this, i tried the wired connection and as well changed the router from inside to the one in the living room but the 1080p files dont play without buffering, any help in this aspect?
New Player:
Play it, drill in deep enough to see what state itâs in. If transcoding figure out what you have to do to Direct Play it.
Old Player:
Enable âDisplay Informationâ, bring up the OSD and âthe informationâ will tell you Direct Play or Transcoding and if so, the reason.
(Note: Using the âOld Playerâ - Settings/Advanced - may cure the issue)
or
Play file - then open Plexweb and go to the dashboard details, for some limited details about the state of the stream.
If you find your file is in Direct Play, but buffering - whatever network youâre on is inadequate to carry that bit rate. If your file is transcoding - find a way to make it Direct Play with a setting or media change.
Very basic troubleshooting, but can lead to a quick work-around or solution.
Iâm not familiar with the Firestick, but if the 1080p files are similar to the ones in your other post, the x265 video and eAC3 audio might be a problem. If the server needs to transcode for any reason, and doesnât have the âoomphâ to handle it, you might get buffering.
This is on the plexweb, not sure about the old and new player on firestick as i have never seen it give me an option, i dont have access to firestick as of now but will post those details as well
For now enabling the âOld Playerâ and âDisplay Informationâ - so an instant read of the stream state can be seen - would probably help while fiddling around with settings and such.
those are the exact same files, i am having issues with the LOST tv show. so basically the plex server not able to handle that on my windows 10 machine is the issue based on your feedback.
on the plex web when i click the select player on the top right corner, it gives me only the option to cast no player to select, this is also on the plex web
Oops - my bad. I see from your screenshot the file has 5.1 AAC audio. I just assumed eAC3. In any event, 5.1 AAC doesnât work that well with anything in my experience and is transcoded
The subtitle format says ASS, but it might be transcoding to that from IDX/VobSub (DVD) or PGS (BlueRay) to keep the formatting. The Now Playing isnât always 100% accurate. The whole video would have to be transcoded in that case.
Does the Firestick play x265 video natively? If not, another reason for transcodingâŠ
Oh, right⊠I did forget youâre not with it ATM.
The settings you need are in the Plex App on the device, but you will also need server access at some point, so have a way to call up the hosted web app when needed.
@eethas â also noticed the video is encoded at 1920 X 1088 - usually itâs 1920 X 1080. I would think thatâs close enough and shouldnât matter, but I donât know how finicky the Firestick player is.
