Plex keeps trying to detect Voice Activity / Intros / Thumbnails for the same files

For a couple of days now my server keeps trying to detect Voice Activity, Intros and Thumbnails for 3 or 4 shows (for one even only for a single season I believe)

In the logs I see:

MDE: unable to find a working transcode profile for video stream

There are not many solutions to be found via googling, here’s what I already found and tried:

  1. This Reddit Thread, which suggests two things:
    • that a possible problem could be the permissions on the files
    • deleting the Codecs in the Codecs directory (but not the .device-id file) (also suggested here in the forums
  2. Another Reddit Thread, which sadly does not offer any suggestions for solutions
  3. Another thing I read (but can’t find the link to anymore) was to check that the files are not corrupted / playable in a different player (e.g. VLC)

For the permissions I’ve made sure that everything has the correct ones. For all my docker services I set the user to the default nobody:users from Unraid, for Plex this is done via Env:

      - PLEX_UID=${PUID}
      - PLEX_GID=${PGID}

I’ve used $ chown -R nobody:users /mnt/user/data/media on my root media folder (which contains “Movies”, “TV Shows” and “Anime” folders for the respective libraries)
I even doublechecked with the linked gist

Sadly this did not fix my problem

Next I reset the codes

$ docker compose plex down
$ cd plex/Library/Application\ Support/Plex\ Media\ Server/Codecs/
$ rm -rf EasyAudioEncoder-8f4ca5ead7783c54a4930420-linux-x86_64/  db205f4-631e8759786d054613dad5b2-linux-x86_64/
$ cd -
$ docker compose up -d plex

As expected codecs got downloaded again, but sadly this didn’t fix my problem either

I’ve also tested all the files in IINA (a MacOS player like VLC), with no problems.
Additionally I checked their hashes against the originals, which also match.

So this isn’t the cause of the problem either.

Same issue here.

Problem still exists, my server scans the same couple files every few hours.

Deleted the logs shortly before it happened again, so here are some new logs that capture the start of the problem. Personally I can’t make anything from them in terms of how to solve it, hopefully support can.

Is there maybe an option to disable this detection of Voice Activity / Intros / Thumbnails for a specific file?

I really hate how my server is wasting so much energy doing nothing productive.

One of the reasons for switching to Plex was that I hoped for a more refined product (or at least better support for problems…)

ALL:

I was working with a friend to track this down with a piece of his media.

We observed:

  1. PMS would always get stuck at the last chapter of the file (visible in the logs)
  2. It would repeat over and over until Scheduled Tasks ended.

We looked at:

  1. Chapters in the file
  2. Actual run length of the movie
  3. Compared the run length of the 1080p and 4k versions of the movie

We found:

  1. The movie had chapter markers in the file which ran off the end
  2. The two movies differed in runtime by several seconds.
  3. The final chapter marker was valid for the 1080p version but not the 4K version (ran past the end-of-file)

Resolution:

  1. Replaced the 4K version
  2. Checked chapter markers and found them to be correct
  3. Let PMS perform it’s analysis
  4. Issue resolved.

Summary:

Consider a closer inspection of the media file.
Compare the chapter markers, etc to published information.
Repair / Replace as appropriate

Not sure if that’s the case for me yet, but how would I check the files?

I know that I’d have to use mediainfo in the terminal probably, but not what exactly to do with it

I’ve attached my logs again, these are files from a run that happened just now and only those containing the problematic files.

If you can please take a look, I’d appreciate it immensely

These logs show me that it’s finding and creating the Thumbs.

I don’t see where it’s getting the Intro / Voice detection activity.

It would have been nice to see the PMS logs to see if there were any database issues during that time.

For the MKV container, if you’ve already identified the problematic files, you can use MKVToolNix Chapter Editor to edit/correct chapter timings.

  1. Load the file into the Chapter Editor
  2. Right click on Edition Entry
  3. Choose Additional Modifications from the drop down menu
  4. Choose Derive end timestamps from start timestamps (screenshot below)
  5. OK & Save

It will make sure a chapter end time does not overlap with the next chapter start time.
It also sets the end time of the last chapter to the video duration.

Note: This assumes the start timestamps are in the correct order. It does not notify you if they are incorrect / out of order.

Thanks for the info, it seems only the 2 episodes from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure had chapters, so I corrected those, hopefully that will solve the issue for them already.

For the Fairy Tail and Moon Knight Episode there were no chapters when I loaded the files, so the issue must be something else for those

I wish the logs included file path but I understand why they chose to keep it this way

What exactly do you mean? The Missing item or unexpected type errors?
The files exist and I can play them (both in Plex as well as locally)

It seems the two JoJo Episodes are fixed by doing what @FordGuy61 posted.

Now I just need to know why the Fairy Tail episode and Moon Knight episode make trouble

I’ve been having this exact issue, for the television shows Hercules and Xena. Checked the timings for each episode and found no overlaps so unfortunately that wasn’t the fix for me either.
