Plex library scanner not seeing SOME movies

Plex Server Version#: 1.25.2.5319
QNAP firmware: 5.0.0.1891

I’ve been wasting many obsessive hours on this. I’ve added an mp4 movie to my MOVIES library. Plex seems to do something, but the movie never shows up. This movie is no different than hundreds of others that work perfectly in Plex

I have added other movies in this series with similar names.

I have renamed the file many different ways.

The file is not any of the excluded file types, nor does it contain any of the excluded words in its name.

I have converted it to mp4 from its original MKV file format several times with both Handbrake and ffmpeg using several different conversion parameters.

I have looked for .plexignore files on the NAS - none.

I have restarted Plex.

I have restarted (and updated) the NAS.

I’m out of things to try. Anyone have a suggestion?

  1. check your library for duplicates (using the Duplicates filter) – this should list library items which have multiple files associated to them where Plex thinks they’re actually different quality versions of the same movie
  2. check your library for recently added files that might have been mismatched – you can e.g. sort your library by Date Added and check if there’s some odd movies you haven’t actually added

Plex rarely ignores files for good. Misplacing them is a different story

tom80H,

You found it. Sorting by “Duplicates” and then “Split Apart” did the trick. I’ve never encountered this before! Why does Plex do this?

Thank you for the wisdom!

Plex will merge files into one library item if it considers them to be the same. This is usually based on the file naming (e.g. deviating from the actual movie name or adding tons of non-related text to the file name can distract the scanner).
