I was adding an Android device this morning. Installed the app and the Link | Plex message with code came up to link account.
However when I went to my phone or PC to enter the link the normal Plex site to enter the link didn’t come up. Instead I was taken to the Plex signup page. After searching for a solution, I ended up on a Plex looking site to enter the code. When I entered it I was taken to another page that told me I had to call a number to complete the verification. Later I found you can enter any number into the scammer site.
I decided to check it out, tapped dial the number and after a few rings someone answered, Thinking this doesn’t sound Plex, I hung up. Well, 20 minutes later the same voice calls my phone. Hopefully it’s not really a Plex rep because I had a few choice words for him. Told him i know he is a scammer and that the Police have been notified. They were not…lol.
Here is a list of the sites I was directed to…
https://plextv-linkv.com
https://mytvcodeupdates.com/plextv
https://mytvcodeupdates.com/error
Phone number it wanted me to call 1-833-384-7877
The phone number the callback came from 1-612-213-5277
Hopefully nobody falls for it but some surely will.
Thank you for the heads up!
Just curious, how did you get to that site? Was it just a Google search?
We show the correct URL right next to the code.
As I said, I was searching for a solution because plex.tv/link was taking me to the signup page. This was happening on multiple devices, windows and android. The search was on duckduckgo.
The search term was “enter plex link code”
Here are the results:
If you are not paying attention to the url, it’s easy to mistake the offending link for the real thing. A couple of other links in that list that pretend to be Plex hijack the browser. I found out the hard way. As long as you can get the browser tab to close it doesn’t seem harmful and my virus scanner doesn’t complain.
I just checked plex.tx/link and it is directing to the code entry page, for some reason it was not this morning.
In order to link a client using the code to your account, you need to be signed into the web app where you enter the link (plex.tv/link). If your session has expired or you had signed out, Plex will bring up the screen where you can sign in or sign up.
The phishing part on their end is certainly bad – just not sure if it might have been triggered by some confusion.
Good to know, that’s what it was doing this morning but I’m not currently logged in to the web app and it takes me to the code entry page. Maybe because I’m logged in to the forum? I wasn’t thinking about being logged in to the web app this morning, it makes sense, now, that it would be required. Maybe they should add “From a web browser on another device, that is signed in to Plex web app”
Your account will usually not sign out by closing the web app.
If you’re not signed in, opening the web app or the link page will bring up the sign-in (or up) page where you can sign-in and should then return to the page where you can enter the 4-digit/letter code.
Yes. It’s the same account. Logging into one also logs you into the others.
I’m astonished the phishers are staffed with humans, respond to chats, make phone calls.
Labour is cheap in India.
And accounts have multiple types of value. So yeah. Still. Why can’t we all just get along?
