There are Plex scammers out there!

This is just a heads-up that there are scammers/fraudsters out there offering “worldwide protection” against Trojans and viruses, because that’s why you can’t set-up your new Plex server on Firestick TV devices.

I experienced this today. I added a new Firestick to a new TV, and thought I’d connect to my server by signing in. I was prompted to get online and use a 4 letter code to authenticate my new setup. “plex.tv/code” is I believe the correct address, but I think I enter “plextv.com/code” or something similar… i.e. minor typo. I was taken to an authentic-looking Plex page, where I entered my code and got a “failed connection” warning with several possible reasons, most implying that hackers had gained access to my home network. I dialled the 1-800 number provided and was told that all of my devices were infected and for $100/year up to $400 for 5 years I could get worldwide protection by a national security agency for current and future hacking problems! The scam was obvious to me and I hung up, but probably not so obvious to some. I wish I would have written down the actual URL I was forwarded to, but, sorry, it was too late after I overwrote the same browser tab, when I tried again with the correct Plex URL. My phone log shows the 800 number was 888.521.0954 for what it’s worth.

I hope this is helpful to someone!

https://plex.tv/link is the URL you’re looking for.
https://plex.tv/code is a 404
http://plextv.com now goes to https://www.northstate.net/plexTV.php.

It is incumbent on you to insure the URL is correct. That’s why you see domains like amason.com and the like being registered. They rely on people not really checking what they are doing or clicking on links that look ok but really are just slight misspellings of common domains.

You can find the URL you went to by examining your browser’s history. You should run a whois(1) on the domain and report it to the abuse department.

Yep it’s all BS…Just a fake (similar) site trying to scare you…

I would recommend changing your password immediately and choose the option to sign out all devices too. Plex (the real Plex) will ask for you to sign into your Plex account, so if that site does the same and you typed in your email and password, they now have your login info.
