Plex media player and flex home theatre for mac

Hy guys,

I’ve beam using flex for a few years now. Not a “heavy user”, just use it from my macbook pro connected with HDMI to my room’s TV so I’m able to use the apple remote control.
The setup i use is Plex media Server installed on my macbook pro and flex media player also installed on the same macbook pro.
Yesterday i was messing around with plex preferences and today i noticed the none of my libraries appeared on plex media player (desktop version for mac). tried the few things i could remember (basically checking out preferences) and as i couldn’t work it out i uninstalled plex media player do i could install it again hoping my libraries would show up again… To my surprise, i wasn’t able to find flex media player for mac download. what i found was plex home theatre so i downloaded it.
Through all of this i didn’t do anything to plex media server.

When i opened home theatre i noticed i didn’t have subtitles anymore. (as a portuguese this is a big deal as I mostly watch Tv shows or movies to get me to sleep and it’s easier to read portuguese than listen to english to get my sleep going… )
I tried everything, watch a fez youtube guides on how to get automatically subtitles working in plex but nothing seems to work… I eventually manually downloaded some subtitles but even that didn’t work correctly as some special characters didn’t show up.

I have subtitles always enabled on plex preferences (the preferences accessible trough the browser) and the languages preferences sorted out on open subtitles agent preferences… also moved up open subtitles agent up the agents list…

In the plex theatre when i select a movie or tv show there is a sidebar on the left that has the subtitles list to choose from… sometimes i get to choose from unknown.srt, english srt and portuguese srt but none of this work. When in playback, through the audio and subtitles preferences (when i press “M”) i always have to check the show subtitles box but no language appears right below it… the only way i can get subtitles is to manually choose it form the browse subtitles option box

So, i got a few questions…

  • what happened to plex media player and why can’t i download it anymore? (it seems only available to plex pass subscribers)
  • how can i get media server preferences to apply to plex home theatre as it seems to me the preferences aren’t applying to home theatre (the always enable subtitles don’t seem to apply on the home theatre)

Sorry for the long post but i tried to explain it throrougly so you can help me.
Thanks!!!

This has been that way since the beginning.
PMP is only available with Plex Pass as long as it is in the ‘Preview’ phase.
If you had access to it before, you probably had a Plex Pass then?

Switch to OpenPHT
PHT is no longer developed.

Thanks for the help!

I can’t remember how i got the media player but i’ve never subscribed to the plex pass. maybe way back when the media server installer came bundled with the player? (i seem to remember it being a .dmg file but now it’s just the app)

already tried openPHT - seems to fix the subtitle issue but it takes to long to start playing a movie/tv show. once i press play it takes about 10seconds or more to actually play it… is it normal? (i’ve tried it without a computer restart between uninstalling the old PHT and installing openPHT)
another issue (that i can live with…) as far as i’ve been able to see in this 10min quick trial after your helpful answer is that i’ve only got english subtitles not portuguese ones… let’s see how it behaves in the future

THANK YOU! YOU’RE THE REAL MVP

So, with Plex Home Theater no longer being developed, Plex Media Player not being available … somehow … (at least for non Plex Pass buyers) and OpenPHT for Mac being compatible only to OS X 10.8 (then came OS X 10.9, then came OS X 10.10, then came macOS 10.11) … what’s THE best Plex client for macOS Sierra 10.11 nowadays?
Thx.
