I’m having multiple issues here. I’m a new Plex user who was guided through most of the process already of setting it up on my DS1522 Synology NAS. However, now I am hitting a wall where the Plex server won’t connect to my NAS, it won’t keep Remote Access enabled, and it won’t find any media files that I put into Shared Folders that have been mapped from my NAS to Plex - regardless of how I name/label the files. I have logged into my router to port forward the LAN ports required, as instructed in a linked troubleshooting article from the Plex website and still have this issue. I would greatly appreciate some help here as I’m unsure of even the next step to take.
First and foremost:
- Make certain DNS resolves. Without it, PMS can’t find plex.tv to talk to it.
- Next is the obvious basic gateway address config on the Syno to the modem/router
If those two are correct and stable (wired connection urged), everything else is easy
Grabbing the log files from PMS (manually from the PlexMediaServer shared folder) will tell us a great deal about what’s happening.
Are you running on Windows as well ? (You tagged this server-windows)
Unfortunately I can’t create a wired connection between the PC and the router at this time. However, the NAS and the router are connected with two ether-net cables and functioning properly. What isn’t functioning is anything to do with Plex.
Yes, I am running Windows 8. I realize this is pretty out of date as well, but it should work for what I’m trying to do so I don’t think that is the issue either.
How do I resolve the DNS (Domain Name Server?) issue? At this point I don’t know how to press forward as I’m not experienced enough to know what my options are, when nothing has worked after researching through numerous forum submissions and articles written on similar issues. It switches between saying I have an outside connection on PMS when I specify a particular port and then saying I don’t have a connection after a minute of specifying a port. Quite often when I try to load PMS from my NAS I get an error page that says, “Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at…” so I’m completely lost at this point. Should I try running PMS from my PC instead of the NAS? Should I restart trying to connect the shared folders (though I’ve done that already too)?
I would review the network settings on the Syno, and if you are using a VPN turn it off to test.
Posting your server logs may also help.
We have a bit to unpack. The most important thing is don’t struggle too much. You found the right people, and we should be able to guide you from here.
- Like ChuckPA and dbirch mentioned, we learn the most from putting your server into debug mode, restarting it, demonstrating the problem for a short time, then getting logs. You were directed to find them in the
PlexMediaServershared folder. Below there somwhere, you’ll find one namedLogs. I’m guessing your server was in debug mode. That’s the default. - ChuckPA has authored the Syno FAQ here on the forums, and it’s very important to follow the tips in there, because Synology NASes are uniquely complex.
- At the bottom of every forum page are the Plex Articles, which are the user manual basically. I refer to them all the time.
So with some general things out of the way, your problems. I would suggest getting PMS installed with a dozen films and a couple of TV series so that it’s happy. Then I would experiment with Remote Access. Keep it simple and small for now, otherwise you’ll swamp PMS to some extent. Let’s just get normal access on your LAN working.
Chuck mentioned your DNS and gateway being important.
PMS on a NAS works best when the NAS has a static IP address. Does yours?
PMS on a NAS resolves hostnames the best when set to use two public DNS servers, e.g.
Primary DNS server: 1.1.1.1
Secondary DNS server: 9.9.9.9
ipv6 DNS server: 2620:fe::fe
PMS on your NAS should have a reachable default gateway. Chuck is suggesting you check your NAS for these settings. Proof that those three things work would be to ssh into the syno and
ping www.google.com
Let’s see how you manage with this knowledge and what you can gather.
Good luck!
Unplug one.
