Plex Media Server on MyCloud Home not accessible remotely

Server Version#: 1.18.6.2350
Player Version#:

I would like to use my Plex Media Server on PC/Smartphone/TV remotely.
All services are working perfectly at home (same network)
My PLEX server is installed on a WD MyCloud Home and when enabled to remote access in configuration.
When i try to access to the server remotely (both from player and on Plex consolle) I receive an error message in PLEX consolle that “[PLEX Server Name] is not currently available” and obviously I’m not able to access to any other configuration.
On the other and I’m perfectly able to access to MyCloud Home storage with WD desktop app / website / android etc… meaning the “NAS” is online and I can access but not the PLEX server on the NAS.
In MyCloud Home configurazione I can see that PLEX server seems to be active.
How I can proceed? (I’m not at home or able to change hard config…)
Thank you
bye
Roberto

I take it you have enabled remote access for your Plex Media Server (Settings > [Server Nsme] > Remote Access)?
Did you have a chance to look at the remote access troubleshooting?

Server Version#: 1.22.0.4163
WD Service Version: 1.18.6.2350
Player Version#: 4.53.0

Similar thing has occurred to myself (maybe noticed it last Thursday 11th March); not able to access library on mobile Plex. Thought I had lost database, as this happened at the end of January, but found could access files on server via Plex on local network connected PC. Can also access server files remotely via WD My Cloud app.

When trying to access remotely on PC, get message: ‘The server “Server Name” does not allow secure connections.’ - If allow insecure connections, still nothing.
Using mobile app: ‘“Server Name” is currently unavailable.’

Have had Plex working remotely for over a year prior to this, and have not changed any settings recently.

Jus wondering if anyone has an answer for this? I recently moved my Plex Server from an old pc to a MyCloud Home and can’t get remote access to work. I have went through the trouble shoot and done what I can to no avail. I have Deco9 Mesh Network and have opened up the port for Plex, I have checked it works on the canyouseeme.org, which is does. As I am only a casual user with Plex, although I do have a Plex Pass, I wasn’t worried about the metadata soI have set up a new account for the MyCloud Home Plex Server and transferred only a couple of files. The photos can be viewed on the app, but the music and the movies won’t play. I have checked the server log and it doesn’t seem to register when I have clicked to active remote access. So at the moment, I can only play the content on a pc, the apps don’t work on the phone, tablet or pc. Any help greatly appreciated.

Why are you guys putting the server on an external drive? (I’m not sure if this is the problem. I’m new to Plex as of today. I’m rooting around the forums and have checked this thread.) So, why not on your computers and point the server to your external files? I have mine on my computer and my media files on an external.

Some users prefer to run their PMS from a device that can more easily kept online around the clock, some are looking for better energy efficiency or want to reduce double traffic on their network (e.g. NAS → PMS → Client vs. NAS/PMS → Client).

In the end it comes down to your specific use case. Running your PMS on a dedicated machine like your regular PC or even a dedicated mini PC like a NUC will usually give you a more powerful setup. If you’re mostly streaming for yourself or have all your media optimized for all potential client types you might however not need that extra power (in which case a NAS will be good enough)

Thanks for the insights.

And thanks for not snarking on this newbie.

I am getting the same thing. Tries port forwarding, resetting upnp all the steps listed. anything new on this topic?

How do I access Remote Access in Plex. Under settings, it does not appear. I don’t have “server name” - “remote access” shown anywhere.

On the left of the Plex home page, I get the message “The server “My Cloud” is unreachable. Make sure it’s running, double check your network, and try again”

I am able to reach MyCloud via its web address, so it is online.

Try accessing your PMS through its local IP address (e.g. http://[MyCloud IP address]:32400/web) – don’t use a domain name or other web address.

Thanks for the response Tom.

My problem is that I cant seem to get to the area in Plex where I would do that.

I guess that’s the point
That’s the URL to be entered into your browser address bar in order to open the bundled Plex web app… it’s nothing you do inside Plex

Does anyone have a my cloud home that actually works (properly) right now? I’m actually about an inch away from doing a new build on a Synology DS920+

Tom, where do I get the IP for my MyCloud so that I can try this.

My issue is that I cannot connect to MyCloud from another computer. At home, there is no problem.

You should e.g. be able to see the MyCloud’s IP address from your router – routers usually have a list of connected devices or devices for which they have an IP reservation.

If you have mapped the MyCloud as a network drive in your Windows Explorer you can also derive the IP address from there in a few steps:

  1. Get the network name of your NAS

    • option 1: check the Network locations section inside Explorer; if the drive is there, you’ll see it as {Shared Folder Name} (\\{NAS-Name}) ({Drive Letter}:) (e.g. Shared Movies (\\MyCloud42) (Z:)). The drive letter part will be missing if you haven’t assigned a drive letter to the MyCloud on your Windows PC. → use the {NAS-Name} part from that text (from the example: MyCloud42)
    • option 2: execute net use in the command prompt (click start, enter Cmd, click the resulting app, enter net use in the terminal window). This display a list of all connected network shares with parameters like Status, Local (=the mapped drive letter), Remote (=the full network path, e.g. \\MyCloud42\Shared Movies) and Network (=the type of network connection). → use the {NAS Name} section same as above (here: MyCloud42)
  2. Execute the following command in a command prompt (see option 2 from above as for how to open a command prompt):
    ping {NAS Name} -4 (e.g. ping MyCloud42 -4)
This will test the connection/accessibility of your NAS from the Windows PC – however it’ll also output the NAS’ IP address. The -4 option in the command forces the output of an IPv4 address instead of some potential IPv6 address.

  3. Use that IP address to connect to your Plex Media Server through a browser on your Windows machine (see the previous threads → http://{IP address}:32400/web

You can only enable and configure remote access while you’re connected to your server – so if you haven’t done it first, you won’t be able to enable it while being outside your home network.
