New User Setup issues

Hello, I am new to all this but wanted to be able to watch my movies on the road ( I travel a bit for work ) but did not want to hog the content from the family. Friend from work told me about PLEX and using My Cloud Home 4TB and have the APP set up in it . When i pull PLEX up on my laptop browser, it works fine, If i close it it dies. When i look at the remote access setting the public has a red x . I have gone into my gateways setting and did the NAT/Gaming rule for PLEX (I have a NVG589 from AT&T) and still nothing . HELP!!!

Welcome
To try and understand the problem then are you connecting to Plex on your laptop/browser when you are away from home and it works?

Assuming your problem is when not at home, then how are you connecting to it i.e. using your home IP address or via app.plex.tv/desktop? From what I understand the remote access part of Plex is used for the apps or app.plex.tv/desktop on your browser.

When i am home and i have the plex site on my laptop on, i can access on all devices . When i close that window, no more access.

I want to be able to access the files via plex on my devises when away or not on my home PC.

I would like for my WD Cloud to do the work i guess is what i am trying to say ( i am kinda dumb at this but enough to be dangerous )

Ok just to be clear is your Plex server on the 4TB device? Just want to make sure it’s not still on the laptop.

If it’s on the NAS then it sounds like it’s just the port forwarding settings. To make it easier have u tried turning on UPnP on your router and 4TB NAS? This would then do the work for u.

It looks like you did setup Plex server on your MyCloud NAS, but you removed it again.
Right now, there is only a Plex server running on Windows under your plex account.

I created a pinhole for PLEX on my gateway . not sure about UPnp. AS for the server , how would you recommend i go about correcting ? ripping the windows and toggling the cloud ?

First concentrate on getting the Plex server on your NAS to start up. Leave the remote access for later.

Just prevent the plex server on Windows from restarting automatically, by right-clickin on its task tray icon and remove the check mark from ‘Start Plex Media Server at Login’.
Then remove the Windows server from your user account here: https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/devices/pms

Then go into the setup menu of your NAS and re-activate the server there.
(How you do that in detail, I cannot tell you, I have no experience with these devices).

To verify the success, do first load the web app from your NAS’s internal IP address (which IP that is, you should also be able to determine from the setup menu of your NAS).
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:32400/web

(You might at first only be able to see the NAS server after clicking on MORE… at the left side of the screen. How to change that is also a separate issue, which we will attend to later.)

thanks . on it now .

ill report back once these steps are handled.

Thanks again !

So i believe i did everything you said to do . Now when i go into my cloud to enable plex , It cannot find my server. I think i am just an idiot and this is outside of my scope …

When and where does it say that?
Directly in the NAS configuration menu?
Or after it has loaded the web app?

i select to configure on the plex option on my cloud and it takes my to the " using plex" web page that talks about the folders that will appear and claiming your server. I will then get a page is not available or my server cannot be found

so i tried it again from the cloud plex configure button and it now has me at the get your plex media server on the web page . in the top right is said it cant find my server

Can you find a button to update the plex server software version?

Or to completely erase the data of Plex on the NAS?

Does it look like this screen?

i looked at the setting in my WD cloud. It shows the connection type is RELAY ( it has been local ). i am not worried about getting my content back, should i just hard reset it and start over ?

This is where I’m unfortunately unable to giove any recommendation, due to my not being familiar with the device.

thanks for your help. IF i am able to get back to where i was , i will jump back on .

last question: i am resetting the cloud. anyway to reset plex to day one ?

Not sure what you mean by that. AFAIR, resetting the cloud will also wipe all Plex data from it. All that remains is your plex.tv account, and that one doesn’t need any resetting or wiping.

i reset the cloud and reactivated PLEX . still the same thing. i do not understand how i can go from being able to see it and play , though locally, to now nothing.

so after resetting the cloud and my gateway . i seem to be back to the remote access problem…
