Plex Media Server running on a QNAP NAS, suddenly is not connecting

Attached are my logs. I’ve tried everything, now ive got a bunch of servers with the same name and the one I’ve been working on for months i cant access to it.

Server Version#:
Player Version#:Plex Media Server Logs_2021-11-09_22-47-35.zip (182.8 KB)

Would you mind sharing some more details about that issue of yours and what you mean by “I’ve tried everything”?

Those logs just show that you were installing and upgrading your QNAP PMS last night around 22:38 - 22:47.

Hello @tom80H, the failure happened before i tried to update PMS, it was what prompted me to update it manually. What happened was that apparently out of nowhere, my my server couldn’t connect, like it couldn’t be found. I tried stopping and starting the server again and at the beginning, that made it connect for like 2 minutes an then it would disconnect again. then after a while it just didn’t connect at all ever, and that’s where we are. When I say i tried everything, what i meant is that i tried everything i feel like i can do with the knowledge I currently have. I’m not really that knowledgeable in these topics. Any help you could offer would be appreciate it. I’ve provided additional Logs as requested by @ChuckPa, hopefully that helps us figure out whats happening and how to fix it. Thanks in advance!

I can see the different named servers on your account.
Some of them have not been seen in a few months.

Which server name are you trying to get working?

Hello Tom,

I have been having the same issue all of a sudden on my QNAP TVS-471 server. It has been doing 2 different things.

  1. QNAP has been stopping the service because it runs out of memory.
  2. The service stays running but I cannot reach it.

What can I provide to help troubleshoot the issue?

MoshBunkerNAS is the one i would like to get working.

@jorgelcastillo22_gmail_com

What is the version number of the QNAP server software? I ask because I have 2 QNAP servers and the issue is only happening on the one with the latest version of QNAP software.

QNAP Server running 4.3.4.1652 no issues
QNAP Server running 5.0.0.1828 is the one having issues with Plex version 1.24.5.5173

@jorgelcastillo22_gmail_com

I can see where MoshBunkerNAS was originally created 2 months ago and had been running until approx 2 days ago when it was superseded by a new MoshBunkerNAS – Preferences.xml had changed.

You’ve not deleted any of the metadata yet?

If not, we can , through a little editing, get the server back into the posture of “Ready to Claim”. All the other data files will be unmodified so if it was working, it will continue.

Does this sound like a plan?

it sounds great! I havent deleted any metadata because i was hoping to get it running again…just let me know what i need to do @ChuckPa

First, I cleared out the old name “MoshBunkerNAS” (the inaccessible server IDs).

We’ll prepare it to be ‘claimed’

  1. Install the QNAP Text Editor app
  2. Create a shared folder, named exactly ‘PlexData’, anywhere you want.
  3. Start Plex
  4. Wait 30 seconds
  5. Stop Plex
  6. Using FileStation, Open “PlexData” → “Plex Media Server”
  7. You will now see the “Preferences.xml” file
  8. Right-click “Preferences.xml” → Open with Text Editor
  9. Very carefully, remove the Name="Value" pairs
  • PlexOnlineUsername
  • PlexOnlineEmail
  • PlexOnlineToken
  • PlexOnlineHome (this may not exist)
  1. Save the file

  2. Start Plex

  3. Let the server have about 1 minute to get started and stabilize

  4. Go to your existing (open) Plex/web browser window - Upper right → SIGN OUT

  5. Open a new Incognito window

  6. Now open the QNAP as http://ip.addr.of.qnap:32400/web

  7. Plex/Web app will load

  8. You will be greeted by the “Got It” and “Sign in” – do this.

  9. The setup wizard will start - This is expected and desired.

  10. It will want to setup new library sections.

  11. Don’t add any new sections .

  12. Continue through the setup wizard setting up other preferences

  13. When you get to the dashboard, your library sections will be there waiting for you.

just to be sure, this PlexData folder needs to be a different one from the one i already created to send you the logs? or can it be the same one? in the case it needs to be a new one, should i do anything with the one i already have?

I am having issues on my QNAP Plex as well today. Can’t log into server admin through the regular URLs.

Actually it gives me some blah about ‘not reachable from outside your network’ while all the libs have yellow triangles. So I click the try again button and then it throws me out completely with a page ‘app.plex.tv is unable to connect to “QNAP-NYC” securely’

This system has been running for over a year without change (besides occasional server updates, but none recently). If I go through the internal (LAN) URL things work but remote config says ‘Not available outside your network’.

This looks like the issue you apparently had y’day according to downdetector hasn’t been fixed (also per here major outage on Nov 10 https://status.plex.tv)

The QNAP package does not erase metadata when uninstalled.

Are you installing on the same volume you had originally installed on / where it was last located ?

If you uninstall and then reinstall the package, your server will be there waiting for you after you reclaim it.

(It is the same behavior as Synology and Desktop Linux machines)

Hey @ChuckPa, i appreciate all the help really, but after I unistalled the package on the nas and installed it again, what happened was that i ended up with 2 servers called MoshBunkerNAS one of which was unaccesable, neither was the old server with the old libraries, seems like that one just dissapeared. After all this, I’ve decided I rather start a new server and create my libraries again.

@jorgelcastillo22_gmail_com

If you want to start over – that’s fine.

  1. Stop Plex
  2. File Station → PlexData shared folder → Click into “Plex Media Server”
  3. Erase all that you see there.
  4. Start PMS
  5. Open nhttp://ip.addr.of.QNAP:32400/web
  6. Go through the normal process and start recreating – with a new friendly name to keep things separate – we can rename later.

I am at a loss what happened to your server.

I don’t delete the metadata when uninstalling. The only way it can be gone (or appear to be gone) is if:

  1. It was deleted manually
  2. Installing on a new datavol.
