I keep getting a setup failed message when attempting to get the server running again.
I had it working for about a year and recently my server wouldn’t show up on the plex app. The status of it would always show “stopped” and I would have to go clear caches for it to appear again.
I have now tried to uninstall updates (I read about it deleting the metadata and all that but don’t care at this point) on both the plex app and plex media server app on the shield. It won’t work, giving me the setup failed notification. I tried various versions of players and servers and no luck.
Any help appreciated.
I wound up getting it to work after trying many things. I can’t pinpoint exactly what made it finally work since I didn’t try opening the app after every single change I made.
I have my media on an external hard drive connected directly to the shield. I actually have two shields on my network but only using the server on one shield.
I uninstalled all updates on the plex app as well as the plex media server app. Using a file explorer, I then deleted every folder associated with plex. I think one in the Android/data on the internal memory of the shield, and I believe there was also one on my external hard drive that has my media on. I left it at that for now.
Out of curiosity I tried to see if my other shield would also have issues so I attempted to set up the server on that one and it worked. So now the plex app showed 2 different “SHIELD android tv” servers with the exact same name. One was the new one I had just created and the other was my original with the media that I couldn’t access. I was thinking maybe it would somehow work or trick it into accessing the original one if they had the same names but I’m assuming they are differentiated by IP addresses or something like that.
I went back to my original shield where I had deleted all the files, force stopped the plex app and server app, cleared data on both, and then launched the plex app. You will go through the whole linking process again and then try to set up your server. That’s when it finally worked. I did change the name from the usual SHIELD Android TV, to a different one to tell them apart and was successful. After that I had to set it all up again, getting the metadata and all of that. I didn’t care as I just wanted it to work again.
