Plex Media Server stuck in claimed state – server not attachable to account

Description:
I lost access to the plex pass account that manages my local plex server. I still have access to another account that was shared some library access, but not all libraries. I’ve attempted to reclaim the server with that account but with no success. I’ve also tried running this script but was not able to reclaim the server.

(https)://github.com/ChuckPa/UserCredentialReset/releases/latest/download/UserCredentialReset.sh

Based on my troubleshooting so far, it looks like my Plex Media Server is in “claimed but orphaned” state.

Evidence:
• PMS reports claimed=1 via /identity even after removing Preferences.xml, clearing tokens, and restarting PMS.
• The server does not appear in Plex Web; only public Plex content is visible.
• Local access (http://:32400/web) works but cannot attach the server to my account.
• Re-claim via claim token does not change state.

Are you able to please reset / detach the server record for the machineIdentifier below so it can be reclaimed.

machineIdentifier: 2df1e72bbca9e1d22e7bc6a4c9ead2f1fb1542c4

Server info:
• Platform: Synology DS918+
• DSM: 6.2.4-25556 Update 7
• Plex Media Server: 1.42.2.10156

Thanks

Server Version#: Plex Media Server: 1.42.2.10156 - Platform: Synology DS918+

<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>

Why could you not claim the server ?

What did you get from the SSH session?
( Console output )

As for removing Preferences.xml, the server will, by default, become a NEW server instance (ID) which is unclaimed.

Hey ChuckPa, thanks for the response.

When I initially tried claiming the server via plex.tv/claim I was able to see some of my existing local libraries but still had no rights (no soup). While troubleshooting, I upgraded from 1.18.5 to 1.42.2.

I was able to successfully run this script (see below), however, when I log in I still don’t see any local libraries and I should still have at least 1 shared with this less privileged account. I do see under manage library access this account does still have access to 1 library. I updated my main plex pass account a few months ago and enabled MFA + saved the emergency codes. For some reason both MFA and the emergency codes do not work, however, I still have access to the e-mail account associated with that plex pass admin account.

After re-claiming the server, in theory shouldn’t I have access to at least the old library that was shared previously? Is there anyway to regain access to that plex pass admin account or regain access to the libraries it setup?

At this point, I’ve been perusing the existing database (I also have some backup copies) and since I’m locked out of my main admin account it almost seems better to try and restore some of my data via that database backup. Unless there is a way for me to recover access to the other libraries setup by my main account..

root@nas:/volume1/Plex# ./UserCredentialReset.sh

User credential reset & reclaim tool for Plex Media Server (Linux) (Synology (DSM 6))
                                 (Version: v1.11.0)

This utility will reset the server’s credentials.
It will next reclaim the server for you using a Plex Claim token you provide from https://plex.tv/claim

Please enter Plex Claim Token copied from http://plex.tv/claim : redacted
Stopping PMS
package ‘PlexMediaServer’ stop successfully
Clearing Preferences.xml
Getting new credentials from Plex.tv
Claim completed without errors.
Username: redacted
Email: redacted

Starting PMS
package ‘PlexMediaServer’ start successfully
Complete.

I see this server “NAS” (1.42.2) on this email address.
I see another server shared with this email which is PMSz 1.18.5.

When you reclaim a server, everything in the DB is retained.
Only the ownership is changed.

At this point, whatever you had in the other email address is now here with this email address

I do see where another “NAS” server is shared with this email address.
I can remove that for you if you need me to.

It does look like the other server is claimed but orphaned status to the other email address.

You can contact Plex billing

https://www.plex.tv/contact/?option=plex-pass-billing

They can help you with recovery of the account and/or moving your Plex Pass to another email address.

You’ll only need provide them with details of your PlexPass account to authenticate you as the real owner.

Can you see both ‘NAS’ servers or is the orphaned one (which is likely pinned as media sources) interfering with this non-plexpass server ?

If you need me to, I can remove the ‘share’ status to this account from that server. It’ll let you see this ‘NAS’ server instance

Hey ChuckPa,

So at the moment I don’t see any local libraries in Plex, only public Plex content. I’m connected through nasIPAddress:32400/web. Under Plex Home I’m listed as a Home Admin but under Manage Library Access all I see is that I have access to 1 library (presumably shared from my inaccessible plex pass account). Not sure if that orphaned server is causing issues. I think that should be fine to remove the ‘share’ status to this account from that other server, particularly if that may give me more visibility to this ‘nas’ instance.

I pinged billing support and will follow up with them to try and get that plex pass subscription moved. I appreciate the help.

Thanks,
Rob

@rob2092

I’ve removed the share to this account for you

At this point, Restart/Reload the Plex/web browser.

You’ll see only this server. Nothing else will be shared into it.
If you have the other shared library from your other account, it will be gone or obviously not available (orange triangle)

At this point, you can Unpin it and use the server locally with this account in full control.

Thanks ChuckPa, I really appreciate it! That has actually fixed the issue of my old libraries being inaccessible. I was able to login with the account I have access to and view/manage those old libraries again. I’ll follow up with billing support about migrating my plex pass to this account. I think this issue can be closed out now. Thanks again for your help.
