By recreating a “DSM 6 installation in the Plex shared folder” , you’re not tricking it.
There is a step not listed there ( this is a different scenario )
ON DSM 7 -
Uninstall the package
ERASE the server instance (it’s an option I put in the installer)
Now you can create the old DSM 6 structure as detailed
Create a user named ‘Plex’
Create a “Plex” shared folder
Create sub folders Plex/Library/Application Support (just as DSM 6 had it)
place the “PlexMediaServer-backup.tar” file in the “Application Support” folder
Right-click it and “Extract here”.
When complete, you should see “Plex Media Server” and all files below it as normal
Right click “Plex Media Server”
Change the ownership to “Plex” (for this folder, sub-folders, and files) — IMPORTANT
Now, install PMS
– BE FULLY AWARE – it’s going to make you go through all the migration permissions steps again. Expect it.
As you iterate through the different checks, when everything is aligned, it will import automatically.
This works because, from the installer’s perspective -
There is an existing DSM 6 directory structure with valid “Preferences.xml” file and database
There is NO existing DSM 7 data anywhere on the system.
It will think it’s performing a first-time migration from DSM 6 → DSM 7
I am running PMS 1.21.1.3906.7000 at this time. Is this the latest version?
Hi @ChuckPa thank you for all your hard work getting Plex working on DSM 7, Synology just released DSM 7 RC and looks like they changed something because I can no longer install or upgrade the Plex DSM 7 spk from the Downloads page (Beta or Release versions)…

Is it safe to delete the “Plex” user, now that it uses internal user “PlexMediaServer”?
@ricktendo
Absolutely, safe to delete
User plex
Shared Folder Plex
– unless you have other uses for it.

Looks like it doesn’t work on my 918+
DSM 7. 41882
Plex (downloaded the x86_64_dsm7.spk above)
I get a popup about permissions at the end. I’m following the instructions. Plex has read/write both on internal system and user. There is no “custom” option.
My plex folder is a certain shared folder.
It’s working as it should.
It’s telling you the internal checks have not been satisfied.
You will need to figure out what has happened to the ownership of the Plex share and all files in it. (something got damaged in there).
Best is probably to forcibly assign ownership to user plex
. (DSM 6 style)
Then follow the instructions I’ve written out there for you.
Each step, will bring you from DSM 6 → DSM 7 and have been fully migrated.
Where are these instructions? I have the same problems with permisions Show above. I tried to change these permisions. As stated.
