Plex Media Server tries to transcode with settings disabled and won't play media

Server Version#: 7.15.0-160
Player Version#: 1.18.6.2350
App Version on Google TV# 8.22.0.02533
App Version on iPad# 7.23

I use a WD MyCloudHome as my media server and for the past couple of days, Plex won’t play any files on my Google TV (Google Chromcast), my browser, or my android phone. But, It will play perfectly on my iPad. Unfortunately, I can’t install an older version of Plex, I can only use the one WD give me.

Been trying to fix this issue for 2 days. I have all the settings for transcoding disabled/or set to not transcode, yet with some movies, it gives me an error saying it can’t transcode, and with TV shows it says media unavailable. The error seems to change when the audio type is different.

Could be that the TV is incompatible with the files that you are trying to send to. I had that problem with my old TV not being able to play HEVC files. The iPad is surprisingly capable when it comes to file compatibility. You should be able to Google what file types your TV supports and if it doesn’t support the files your after it may be time to invest in a nice media player like the Apple TV 4K or Nvidia Shield as they have tons of compatibility with a ton of file types.

This issue only started about two days ago. The files have been there for months and I’ve been watching them without an issue. The Google TV is not a TV. It is the new Google Chromcast with Google TV

Sorry I must have misread your original post. I would pull your logs and post them. Someone smarter then I will hopefully come along, read those, and be able to help. (I don’t know what to look for in logs yet)

No, I actually edited the post based on your response, just to avoid confusion.

Regarding the Android devices:

What version of Plex on Android is the issue occurring because this has noting to do with secure connections. There is no such error containing [FFmpeg] [ERROR] [tls @ 0xc597c7e0]

The only errors I get is;
Error issuing curl_easy_perform(handle): 28
SSDP: Error parsing device schema for http://192.168.5.1:5500/rootDesc.xml

I’ve also noticed this:
Streaming Resource: Reached Decision id=396 codes=(General=2000,Neither direct play nor conversion is available. Direct Play=3000,App cannot direct play this item. Direct play is disabled. Transcode=4002,Not enough CPU for conversion of this item.)
yet every setting in relation to transcoding, I’ve disabled or turned off. And Direct Play and Direct Stream is on.

The above IP address is unknown to me. No device on my network has that IP address.

If I disable secure communication, my media server disconnects. This is not my first rodeo. You can’t BS me with “this is a known issue”.

  1. You can ignore the SSDP messages. They are basically noise. Plex uses SSDP to discover clients on the network. Some devices (cameras, smart home devices, etc), reply in a format Plex does not understand and it is logged as an error.

  2. The certificate problem with Plex Media Server 1.18.x & current Android clients is real. If you cannot update your server, then you will need to disable secure communications (Settings → Network). There is no other known workaround and Plex has not fixed the problem in the Android app.

As the setting affects all clients, you will need to verify that they are configured to allow insecure communications. Access via app.plex.tv will also be affected. You will need to point your browser directly at the NAS, http://nas_ip_address:32400/web.

  3. If you disable transcoding (Settings → Transcoder) and Plex cannot direct play the video, then you will receive an error message. Unfortunately, the message is rather cryptic, “The server is not powerful enough to convert video.” Something along the lines of “Unable to play because video transcoding is disabled” would be nice.
