Plex media server was unable to open its media database

Server Version#:1.18.4.2171
Player Version#:Latest (Firestick)

I had a problem with no matter what video I chose the wheel went round and then I hot the message " Playback has stopped because the connection to the Plex Media Server has been lost" I reinstalled Plex on the PC and Firestick which cured the problem with playback except it refused to accept there were subtitles see: Subtitles.

This morning when I looked again there were subtitles but “connection to the Plex Media Server has been lost” was back again. So I tried to uninstall the Plex server and install again. Now I get “Plex Media Server was unable to open its media data base” I have been through the threads regarding this and tried squite but my problem is that my C:\Users\X\AppData\Local\Plex\Plex Media Server\Plug-in Support\Databases is absolutely empty. [Note the Path is slightly different to what other people seem to have]

What I think I need to do, although I would like to be proved wrong, is not only uninstall Plex and Plex server but remove all traces of it from my computer so that I can do a completely clean installation. Is there any way of doing this?

The path is the correct location on your system.

I can see 2 possible reasons why this folder might be empty for you:

  1. your plex server is actually running under a different Windows user account. (Did you start it with “Run as Administrator”? Are you using more than one Windows user account regularly on this machine?)
  2. You previously moved the plex data folder to a different location. Take a look at the content of
Settings - Server - General - ‘Show Advanced’ - “The path where local application data is stored”

Yes I previously moved the Plex data folder to a different location. I have now got Plex Media server open but nothing is working. Is there a method for a clean installation?

If you look into the registry, you can find the path to where it was set:

LocalAppDataPath

Verify this path is still existing and accessible by plex.
If it is not, you can either restore the path,
or delete this single key from the registry, which causes Plex to fall back to the default location.
