Plex no longer sees my Hauppauge WinTV-quadHD tuner, "Add Device" scans forever

Thank you for the response. I didn’t see anything in the release notes to suggest this was fixed in any recent update so a question for other users affected - has anyone who previously had the problem taken a later release with the problem resolved? I’m not interested in whether you’ve found workarounds - just a straightforward does it work or not for you post 1.20.4.3508.

I just rebooted twice on Version 1.20.4.3517 and each time Live DVR viewing failed. I have just downloaded and installed Version 1.20.5.3562. Sorry, the problem is NOT fixed!!!

WTF?

@hh-1
Would you be able to zip up your logs and DM them to me please.

Thanks.

Since I am the one who started this thread I thought I should report back here as well vs just directly to AhiyaHiya.

About a month ago I did the update to 1.20.3 and had the same issue, but was able to get things working by manually killing the Plex Media Server process and restarting it. It has run fine since then. Today I ran the update to 1.20.4 and I had no issues and did not need any manual intervention.

Seeing hayeshouse1 mention 1.20.5, I did a check for new updates, but Plex reports back that my Version 1.20.4.3517 is up to date.

Hi @andyev26 , to answer your question from before, I cannot advise whether or not 1.20.4 will correct the issue that you are experiencing, since you may or may not have had the same problem experienced by other users in this thread.

I can take a look at your server logs, and from that, I can tell you if 1.20.4 will help you out.

If you prefer not to send your logs, then I would advise to wait for the next release.

Thanks for the response. I’m encouraged that this is being given some priority and hopeful that it will make a release soon. I don’t think that there is anything in the releases I haven’t taken that I really need so will sit tight and hope for a confirmation that this has been fixed soon.

All from a single reboot?

It sounds like some resource is preventing Plex Tuner Service from working properly if you cannot view any channels on your DVR.

From the log files (given that Debug logging is at least on), I can at least see what error message is being emitted, to explain what’s happening.

-AhiyaHiya

OK, Hopefully I am in the correct area and somebody can help.

Plex Version 1.20.4.3517

DVR wouldn’t work. Deleted DVR now it can’t find the DVR and reset it up. I am using a WinTV-dual HD USB Dongle. Updated Win 10 drivers for the dongle.

Nothing works and I am a bit frustrated since The Masters is coming up and I really need to record it since I can’t watch it live.

Help??

@zmmetz
Can you zip up your Plex Media Server log files and DM them to me? ( https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/ )

I can take a look at the logs to see what is preventing your DVR from being set up.

-AhiyaHiya

OK. I sent you the file requested. Thanks for your assistance

It wasn’t seeing my WinTV-DualHD under previous versions, but Version 1.20.4.3517 has worked. The Plex app is seeing my TV dongle and I have sucessfully tuned it and downloaded the EPG.

My Astrometa USB stick sometimes works with Plex and sometimes not depending on the server version.
1.20.4.3517 works (I had to restart it after installation)
1.20.5.3562 not working again

@ahiyahiya Thank you for your replies, it’s good to get some updates on the status of this issue.

I’m not sure if you saw the logs I posted before or not, but I continue to have the same problem with a WinTV-dualHD tuner not working. I updated to the latest Plex Media Server today, again, and still have the issue where “Scan Channels” doesn’t work and I cannot get channels to play live. I’m attaching logs here, again, and I hope they help to get the issue finally resolved.

To help make sense of the logs, here are the steps I took: I installed the update, tried to watch live TV (which failed), then removed the DVR from the settings, re-added it, tried the channel scan (which failed), continued without the scan, then tried live TV again (which failed). All same as they failed on the prior versions.

Not sure if it will help in all situations… Remove the hardware reference.

After the recent update, my WINDOWS PMS Version 1.20.5.3583 seemed to fail while the Tuner Service tried to bind to a ATSC tuner which is no longer connected to my system. It would fail and shut down after about one minute showing this in the TS log.:

***Nov 15, 2020 10:03:44.689 [3516] WARN - [E] web_service_t::get_device_status. Failed to make compound device for device uuid dvb#bda#usb#vid_2040&pid_026d#0013862197# ***

I backed up the registry.
I searched out the registry key with the find function for “0013862197” from the above message.
and found a section: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\MediumCache

I cleared ALL of the keys located there and restarted PMS.

Crossed fingers… It is still running.

I’ll update if anything changes.

UPDATE 2020.11.17 Removing the registry keys did the trick. Running as expected.

Whelp, I may have to take back my previous statement. I had manually exited the Plex Media Server and killed the Plex update process after running the 1.20.3 update and manually restarted the Plex Media Server and all was fine once I did that. I think when I ran the 1.20.4 update maybe I never rebooted and it continued to run fine. But this morning I rebooted due to a Windows 10 update, and apparently the same issue with the tuner came up again but I did not notice until it failed to record the evening news.

I repeated the process of exiting Plex Media Server and killing related processes and manually restarting it and all was fine again. I noticed the update for 1.20.5 and ran that and rebooted, and yup, it lost my tuner yet again. I ran through the process of exiting the Plex Media Server and killing any remaining process and manually restarted it and all is fine once again for now.

I have sent an update and copy of the logs to ahiyahiya but wanted to put a message in this thread as well.

Jim

I need to jump on this boat as well. Keep getting can’t tune to channel message. I have tried rebooting the computer (worked for a day), reinstalled PMS (worked for a day), deleted and reinstalled the dvr (only worked for a couple hours).
Yesterday I reinstalled PMS, and noted the download was a newer version than what I was running previously. It worked till this morning, and there was an new update to install today. I cannot keep this one working at all.
I am running a wintv quadhd card.
(File removed)
I did forget to mention that the tuners are working fine in the wintv app

Just rolled back to the prior version which worked fine.
Waiting on WINTV recording and will try and locate the missing tuner…more to follow

I would recommend removing the hardware from Device Manager and then deleting the keys from the registry as I mention above…

Reinstall the hardware and try again.

Can’t hurt to try.

Let us know if that works.

I have been working with providing AhiyaHiya more details about the issue and it sounds like he may be narrowing down on it.

So far AhiyaHiya has been the only Plex Employee posting to this thread. All the rest are just Plex Pass holders (me included), so take that into account when deciding if you should try anything more complex.

For now it seems that you have a choice of work-arounds, both of which are easy and straight-forward:

  1. Go ahead and get the latest updates, but just be aware that Plex will not work properly with your tuner until you manually restart the Plex Media Server after every reboot/shutdown of Windows until a fix is in place:
    – Right-click on the “Plex” icon on the task bar over by the clock (you might need to click the up arrow to “Show hidden icons”) and click on “Exit” from the menu.
    – Use the Windows Task Manager to make sure no other Plex process is still running (Plex Tuner Service may be running and need to be killed from the Task Manager)
    – Restart Plex (it should be in listed in your Start Menu)

  2. If you do not want to shut down and restart Plex after each reboot/shut down, you can roll back to a version prior to 1.20 and ignore any updates until this problem is resolved. Instructions on how to roll back to an earlier version of Plex can be found here:
How do I roll back the version of Plex?

There should be NO need to go through anything more complex than that for now… Hopefully a true fix will be in place before too much longer.
