Plex "not available outside your network" when connected remotely

Server Version#: Version 1.14.0.5465
Player Version#: app.plex.tv

I am currently connected to my plex server remotely (I’m about 600 miles away) using the web interface through app.plex.tv and I am confused by the message telling me that I cannot be doing what I am doing. Shouldn’t the message at least say “only indirectly accessible” or something (if that is how I am able to connect with it)?

Also, I have changed nothing in the configuration of the Plex Server, Windows 10 (where it runs) or the cable modem used for internet access. So why did my remote access status change from “is remotely accessible” to “not accessible from outside your network”?

On a potentially related note, for a little while before my trip I started noticing that one of my android tablets at home started telling me that my playbacks were indirect, too. Even though the tablet is on the same home network as the plex server. I ensured the app was up-to-date and even removed and reinstalled it, but the indirect notices still persisted – most of the time. Sometimes it would just start playing. Very confusing.

I recently experienced this traveling to Thailand while running PMS v1.13.9.5456.

Try testing preferred network interface in the PMS network settings, if you have multiple in use. There have been a few changes to how it works in recent versions.

Thanks! I am concerned about altering remote access settings while traveling because I don’t want to lose the access I DO have. However, your suggestion caused me to look things over a bit more and I noticed that my public network PORT is being reports as 0. I believe this is a BAD THING. I found this article about troubleshooting a similar issue, but it cannot be done remotely: Remote Access Port 0 I will need to have a trusted (and competent(!) user help me test once I return home.

Thanks again, I think your hint led me towards a solution. At least, I HOPE it did!

Sounds like a good idea if you don’t have VPN access to your internal network. Might be an issue with UPnP.

If you’re relying on UPnP for your external connection - the manual port forward is a much more reliable, and secure method, of allowing traffic to your server. I’d use that method once you return home.

Also - PMS v1.14 you’re using (which is beta) has known issues with remote connections, so I would downgrade to the previous public build and wait to upgrade until the next public release:

When is the hotfix going to be released? I’ve been having the same issue with not being able to connect remotely - since the most recent update. Thanks!

You can easily downgrade to 1.13.X without losing any data. I’d advise doing that vs waiting on hotfix for 1.14 beta build

It was released yesterday - fixing two bugs that impacted remote access

See release note

  • Automatic port mapping could fail with some older routers (#9335)
  • Fix for Server Unreachable and Remote Access issues (#9228)

Wow! I’m not even home and my Plex remote access was fixed! I just checked and my server updated itself to 1.14.0.5468 and now I have direct remote access again!

THANKS PLEX TEAM!
