Plex not downloading Metadata for movies Synology

I did that earlier today when you suggested it and it didn’t help. Anything else I can try?

And to clarify, I have 2 PMS’s and they both have this problem. One is on a windows PC and the other is on my Synology NAS.

Here are the logs again…

The only thing left is to go through which agent is assigned to the library.

Are you using “Plex Movie” as the agent (Edit the library section -> Advanced)
You have the choice of “Plex Movie” or “The Movie DB”.

I am but they are both selected.

Under The Movie Database, “The Movie Database” is not de-selectable.

There is only 1 in the Library.

Please see here.

I take it the logs aren’t giving you any useful information?

Nothing at this point.

I would like you to give one more shot with “Refresh All Metadata” in this library section then collect the logs again.

I apologize for being a bit scatterbrained . The forum move has been a lot of work.

No problem. I did it and here is the logs. One other thing that may be worth mentioning, the refresh all metadata is finishing in just minutes… there are over 1100 movies in the library.

Thank you for them. I"m seeing a few things. I’m writing this reply as I go through your logs and will summarize at the end. (been a looong weekend  )

There are absolutely no other errors or warnings in your logs. By all accounts you should have everything.

I’ve seen this before and wasn’t happy with how it was resolved.

I would like you to create a new Movie-type library section with the name “ChuckPa” so you can easily identify it.

Add just enough media folders to it to include those currently giving you this problem.
Also, Please select “The Movie DB” as the primary agent in Advanced before you Add the section.

Let’s see what does.

If you get metadata, knowing the caches were previously cleaned out, then somehow you have a corruption in the primary DB. IF you still have the backup databases, we can roll back presuming they go back far enough to before this started.

If you don’t have database backups (Settings - Server - Scheduled Tasks), we have a dilemma to resolve which will take some work.

Please let me know your resuls

Hi Chuck,

Sorry for the delay, I was out of town for the week.

This seems to have helped or at least given a clue… As you may have suspected when I added the new library titled “ChuckPA” it was able to add the metadata. Additionally, movies added in the old library mostly still do not have metadata but in ChuckPA they do. There were a few in ChuckPA that didn’t have metadata but I was able to refresh and download the metadata. So the question now is how to fix it… or should just delete the library and start over?

Additionally this had created a new problem. For whatever reason PMS has created A LOT of new Collections that were not there before. It created collections for movies that don’t have sequels. Most of these collections have only one movie in them. I tried deleting the collection but then the movie was also permanently removed from the library (but still on the HD). I searched for ways to do a mass edit of the collections list but from what I can tell this needs to be done one by one and given what already happened I’m assuming I need to remove the movie from the collection before I delete it otherwise the movie will disappear too? And, is there any way to get those movies back in the library?

My folder structure on my NAS is such that I’ve only separated the movies into two folders on my NAS. One is “DVD Movies” and the other is “BD Movies”. For the ChuckPA Library I only added the DVD Movies.

Is there some sort of “auto collection” feature that I don’t know about? Why would it have automatically made collection for some of the movies?

Thanks,
Randy

My Mistake! <facepalm> I should have told you to turn this off in the Advanced tab when creating the library section.

You can turn it off now in the library section in the Advanced tab.

I’m confused on what I should be turning off.

I go to Settings>Server>Library>Show Advanced, right? I don’t see anything about auto collections. What am I supposed to turn off?

As far as my library is concerned should I just delete the present library and start over?

Thanks.

No.

  1. Hover over the library section name
  2. Expose the ellipsis
  3. “Edit” the definition (as if you were going to add more folders)
  4. “Advanced” tab
  5. Turn off collections in there.

Ok, got it. And is the checkbox, “Use collection info from the Movie Database” the reason why all these collections were automatically created to begin with?

And as far as original library is concerned, is my best course of action to delete and start over? Will that delete the corrupt library database that seems to be the problem?

Why are collections enabled by default? That’s what the developers decided. If there are enough voices to get them to change the default to OFF, they’ll do it. Personally, I don’t use collections. I find them too confusing in a well curated library

How do you feel about this new library instance? Are you happier with it than the other?
If you are, and don’t mind moving forward from here, then you know what to do with the old one

So this is weird… This whole problem I had for several weeks. I was first waiting for it to fix itself, hopefully with an update of PMS or something but that never happened. So finally I started this thread. After we got to a resolution I made the new library and set the PMS to start it’s scan and left town for a few days for work. When I got home the old library is magically working now and downloading all the metadata just fine. So now I’ve deleted the new library and stuck with the old.

What are your thoughts on that???

There’s one word for it: “Voodoo”

When metadata doesn’t download but the file names and structure is known valid, usually the underlying cause is previous failed attempts (internet burps) which have built up in the agent caches.

PMS does try to clean up but it can’t always get everything (yet).

To that end, the easiest step is to

  1. Stop PMS
  2. Navigate to the Plex share, Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Plug-in Support/Caches
  3. Delete everything you see there. PMS will recreate what it needs
  4. Start PMS
  5. “Refresh all metadata” in a library which is missing metadata & posters.

PS: This post was tagged for the Linux server forum. I took the liberty of retagging it for Synology. It will make finding it easier in the future should you need to

I guess I thought it was odd because a couple weeks ago when I first started this thread that was one of the first things you suggested and it didn’t seem to work. Nonetheless it’s working now and thanks for all your help.

Sorry about the mis-tagging.

Don’t worry about the mis-tagging. This forum is tag based whereas the other was clearly hierarchical (I prefer that but the provider had some issues )
