I have some of my Movie library in sub folders inside my Movies Folder. For example, I have an MCU folder with The Marvels.mp4 in it. After updating a few days ago, those files were marked as unavailable. I upgraded again today, and that is still the issue.
I’ve scanned the library many times. I even emptied the trash and scanned again (which was a mistake, because I lost all my tags and selected posters), and The Marvels wasn’t found until I moved it out of the MCU folder and then directly in to the Movies folder.
I even tried adding the MCU subfolder to the Library, but files there still aren’t being found. I’ve checked permissions. The files are all on an NFS share and all have 744 permissions with my user and group as the owner.
Are subfolders no longer supported, or did I find a bug?
They never have been supported. They just sometimes work. Like shooting a gun straight up in the air, most off the time it is likely to not land on you. Doesn’t mean is the correct thing to do.
where /Movies is the library root folder /Movies/Ironman/Ironman.mkv is supported
Neither /Movies/MCU/Ironman/Ironman.mkv nor /Movies/MCU/Ironman.mkv have ever been.
If you want to do that then you need to add each sub folder /Movies/MCU/Movies/StarWars as the a root, which will cause that you cannot have individual movies in /Movies/
Plex uses a database, it isn’t just fancy folder viewer like XBMC/Kodi. Plex does have collections which are not limited by what folder things are in so things can be in multiple collections.
As of right now, Plex doesn’t have any of my collections, because my library is organised into collections, and Plex isn’t picking those up. It is as if it doesn’t even see the files the next level down. Is there somewhere I can at least set the scan depth to 2?
No, Your files need to be organized like i described above else you would need to add every single sub folder that not’s a show folder. Such as your xxxHolic(+) to the library.
Somehow I regret being more organised than Plex’s own developers.
I don’t really want to unravel all my neatly organised collections just to satisfy a tool that didn’t consider how users organise their media. I might find some other way to go about it, I’m just not sure what it is. Some flattened directory of symlinks.
Because that isn’t the only collection in here, there’s 20-30 of the things. If only we could specify the glob for matching videos or even just the option to bump the walk depth from 1 to 2…
Users organize their media in thousands of different ways. No way is right or wrong but only one can be picked so the app can understand what it is seeing an import into the database and match thing to metadata. Plex is not and will never be a just file/folder browser
It doesn’t have to be a folder browser, it just has to search one level deeper for files…
Actually, I’m not sure how this is so different from TV shows which have multiple seasons. In that case too, you end up with an extra level of folders usually.
The number at the start makes it sort properly for my own folder listing.
The number at the end is picked up by Plex as a season number for its listing.
