Plex not working away from home network

Server Version#:1.32.5.7349
Player Version#: 1.75.0.3920-8b50876d
I have an issue when I try and access my media away from my home network, I get this message “Something went wrong playing your media. Please try again. Could not direct play because: Not enough bandwidth for direct play of this item. Required bandwidth is —kbps and only 2000kbps is available. Could not transcode because: Not enough CPU for conversion of this item”

it seems like its a relay issue but relay is checked off, remote access has a green tick - I’m using a wdmycloud mirror 4tb as server and an orbi RBR350 with 2 satellites. Everything works fine on the home network but nothing will work away - this is beyond frustrating - can anybody help please ?

@mickalopolous can you help? you seem like the plex magician

Log Level

Disable verbose logging. It is not needed 99% of the time and can impede problem analysis.
Settings → System_Name → General + Show Advanced

EDIT: Then restart Plex Media Server. A restart is required for a lower log level to take effect.

Allowed Networks

You’ve a syntax error in allowed networks.

Be careful allowing remote sites access without authorization. Clients allowed without authorization have full administrative rights in Plex Media Server. They can access/change any PMS setting and delete media from your system.

Remote Streaming

Verify the bandwidth settings on the Plex client. Most Plex clients default to 2000 kbps for remote streaming.

Verify the bandwidth settings in Plex Media Server.
Settings → Remote Access + Show Advanced.
Internet upload speed and Limit remote stream bitrate.

That message appears when (a) video transcoding is disabled or (b) the CPU is not strong enough to transcode the video.

Review Settings → Transcoder → Disable video stream transcoding.

Plex Media Server Logs_2023-08-02_13-05-13.zip (2.7 MB) is this any better?
Thanks for the response @FordGuy61 really appreciate it - i’ll be honest i’m out of my depth here - just want it to work - wasn’t sure if the orbi router was the issue - just need to sort it as I’m going away and would be good to have for the kids
thank you again

How do I correct this? I’m a bit confused - sorry

Delete them. They’re not needed, at least for remote access.

I’ll look at the log files later this evening. I’ve been offline most of the last couple of days.

Verbose logging is still enabled. You need to restart Plex Media Server after changing the setting (undocumented, but required).

In Settings → Remote Access:

  • It says, “Fully accessible outside your network,” correct?
  • What is entered for Internet Upload Speed?
  • What is set for Limit Remote Stream Bitrate?

Configure your Plex Media Server and Plex mobile app as listed below.

Then try and stream something and see what happens.

Transcoder Settings
In Settings → Transcoder, configure as follows and save changes.

  • Not selected: Enable HDR tone mapping
  • Not selected: Disable video stream transcoding
  • Selected: Use hardware acceleration when available
  • Selected: Use hardware-accelerated video encoding

Phone Settings
Now look at the Quality settings in the Plex app on your phone.
Configure them like this:
Video Quality Section

  • Auto Adjust Quality = Off
  • Limit Cellular Data = Off
  • Remote streaming quality = Maximum (or Original)
  • Home Streaming = Recommended
