Hi, I did not use my app on TV for 1 or 2 weeks and everything was working fine before. Now I can’t play any files. I looked for solutions like setting the TV connections to “Always” and the media server connections to “Preffered” and it did not work, the error changed though.
When this started a message would appear after the file loaded saying something about a “Media format not supported” which is weird because I was playing that same file fine 2 weeks ago. And that happened to many others, with the same format and with others.
When I enabled the “Always” option it started to load the file, but instead of a error message I just get a black screen that I can interact with as if there was a video playing, it has the runtime of the episode. But nothing happens, no file starts, no audio, no video.
I can provide whatever logs you need, just need to know witch ones.
The same files work fine on the windows app, the web version and on my cellphone.
I’m experiencing the same thing. Started yesterday when the app updated on my TV. It did work for a while yesterday, but now it’s doing it again where it won’t play anything. It played music perfectly fine this morning, too. But my TV shows won’t play right now. None of them. I don’t get an error message, just a black screen.
As said by OP, the file plays fine on my computer and on my phone.
Update: some shows will play fine. Others give me the black screen, with no error. I see no pattern as to which work and which don’t. One is a show that won’t play hasn’t changed in months, another has a new episode from last night.
Please enable logs in the app: Settings → Advanced → Log to Server
Reproduce the issue with the problematic files and then post your logs or DM them to me.
Sharing a sample video having the problem is always really helpful as well, you can make a short clip of the video (make sure the clip is also exhibiting the issue) and then send it to me.
I turned off Direct Play and my problematic files are working now. I posted this in a separate thread but there’s no traction there, hoping some others can confirm that it’s a Direct Play issue.
Edit: I work from home tomorrow and should be able to get some logs to you @sLumpy. I did DM you about the other thread as well, not sure if there’s a way to merge but I suspect that other user has the same issue as described here.

Unfortunately disabling “Allow Direct Play” did not work for me.
Update: I wonder if it had to do with my home internet speed. I had reduced speeds (4G fall back) due to fibre network maintenance in my area. Once that was resolved, Plex on my TV started working and I was no longer staring at just a black screen.
Does the Samsung TV app play via internet or local home network?
Disabling direct play just got me a different error saiyng that the media file is not supported, but I played the same file a few weeks ago without any problems.
My TV works with the wi-fi. I have one of those things that works with android and the android version plays fine. But I wanted to use the TV one that is far better.
I am having the same issue - Samsung TV, but some movies will play, others won’t. And I checked the files - they are all mp4. Again, I can play Moneyball (mp4) but not Mission Impossible (mp4).

Note - as is the case with your issue, all my files play on Plex on my Mac, iPhone, etc. So I am screensharing from Plex on my Mac to my Samsung TV.
I have a thread with sLumpy with logs and one of my problematic videos. He said he see’s no issue in the logs but the video I shared with the blackscreen clearly shows there is a problem that must not be recorded during the debug.
Having the same issue. Some files play fine but other refuse to play on either of my Samsung SmartTV’s. I have no problem playing the files on other devices (pc, ipad, mobile phones).
I’ve been pinging @sLumpy for updates or if he needs more info and getting radio silence. Either they know it’s an issue and are working on it, or are adding this to their pile of issues to be forgotten about.
I too am having the playback problem with my Samsung Series 6 Smart TV. It will play some movies, but not others. Tried turning off Direct Play and restarted media server. Also turned off “Allow direct play” on the specific movie. I will check to see if there is any pattern with file types, but it is so many of them, it is unlikely. The file is open, but doesn’t play. I have tried going to a chapter, pausing and playing, but it will not play. Like everyone else here, the file plays fine in other apps, like VLC and it is fine, just not the Plex app on my Samsung. Will keep checking here and trying things on this end.
