Plex on Amazon Fire tablet - sync is a disaster, Needs internet and deletes synced content randomly

So,

i’ve spent the last 6 years telling everyone how awesome plex is and how its the answer to every media question ever i was so pleased with myself as i got ready for my transatlantic flight with 6 devices (4 kindles, a galaxy s7 edge and an ipad mini) for the family with 5 movies each (external sd cards on all but the mini and 1 fire) - all set for the plane ! Best Dad Ever !

Problem 1 - affected all kindles

We get on the plane - fire up plex - go to downloaded content and …

All of the kindle fires show no synced content - nothing , arghhhhh , i panic and setup my phone as a hotspot and quickly try to download the movies again and … oh weird the downloaded content is back …

It seems like plex for kindle fire needs an internet connection to play downloaded content - this needs to be fixed. Its only on first start (if plex remains in memory you can swithc between them just fine)

Please fix this - i’m sure its not a hugely difficult piece of code (not like problem #2)

Problem 2 - affected only the kindles with external storage ( S7, kindle hd, mini were fine)

I’ve seen this in a few places on the forum and the SD card management for Plex is a total mess. When you tell plex to save to external storage , the next time you reboot the kindle it changes the default location to internal. However it still tells you that the free space is that of the card. Sometimes if you flck the location back to external it works, sometimes it deletes your files. sometimes just by bringing up the sync menu it deletes your files. I looked at the fires storage management and i can see why this is tricky to program for , so i have a suggestion hat might make it easier, rather than having to choose the sync location, always look in both places and provide the choice. this means that if the card hasnt mounted or gets removed its no big deal. Also throw in a user verification before removing the db entry for synced files (Plex cant find die hard on external storage - stop syncing or try again ?
This would also free up maximum device storage to use both internal and SD !

1: Can you give me the steps that you are taking to get to where you are at? Perhaps it is different than what I’m doing. Here’s what I see while having my daughters kindle in airplane mode:
a) Her account was the last logged in (I put the table in airplane mode before opening Plex, from a cold boot up due to dead battery), hence it was the only account able to log in. This is expected as authentication requires an internet connection. Not a big deal since she would be the one to use it (for me).
b) Once logged into the app while offline, it switches to the local content.
c) By default mine select “Open Video File”, so I switched to TV Shows and could see the content just fine. I was able to play the videos without issue.

2: I don’t have any expandable memory in this kindle fire and can’t attest to anything here.

Difference is on 1a) Tablet is not in airplane mode before opening plex

There seems to be some specific switch on airplane mode to not try and log in, however if you have airplane mode off but still no wifi connection it causes the issue.

Switching to airplane mode before launching plex or loading plex with a wifi connection then switching to airplane mode both seem to work. Now i know this i can probably ensure there are no issues going forward as long as i sequester kindles between sync time and flight time (harder than it might sound with 3 smart kids)

Bottom line is Plex sync is a complete and utter disaster.

Problems range from the completely useless “There is an error with this item” to “999” errors, to the absolutely absurd requirement for a connection to the server to delete local content!!! Come on, this is basic journaling if there REALLY is a need to tell the server that a client has deleted something. I often have to simple delete Plex and re-install JUST to get synced items off my phone.

Currently I have been waiting for 4 hours for Plex to sync some music and it has completed 180MB !!! And a serious number of artists have a “the path is invalid” error even though they play just fine!!!

Disaster. Complete disaster. Has been for YEARS now and absolutely NO attempt to fix these issues.
