Everything is updated (server, app, etc) to the latest
I have, in the same house, using the same server, with the same internet on different TVs the following:
Amazon Fire Stick 4K - Plex works fine
Amazon Fire TV (3rd Gen) - Plex works fine
Amazon Fire TV Cube (2nd Gen) - Plex is UNUSABLE.
Many items simply freeze when you initiate the playback.
HEVC is particularly bad, in 1080 or 4k resolutions.
Using subtitles is a nightmare with freezing and slowness.
Plex doesn’t update played or non played.
Its a nightmare.
Can someone please explain as to what in Gods name is going on with Plex on the new Cube?
How is it possible that I changed from my old 2nd gen fire tv to a brand new cube and nothing works?
Am I missing something in configuration?
Am I doing something wrong?
I’m also getting a number of problems with Plex playback on the new fire tv cube.
Mostly it is with playback not starting. Files that played fine on the previous fire tv I had now will not start to play. I have to switch to my apple tv to play them. Not sure why this is happening as this new fire tv cube should be able to play more formats than previous iterations, not fewer!
I had similar problems when first setting up my Cube, but found that they were due to data issues. Not sure what the electro-magnetic interference is like where your Cube is (or if you’re even trying to use wi-fi), but I found that by using the ethernet adapter instead of wi-fi it worked fine. My Cube was sitting between a 55" TV and a shielded drive enclosure that were preventing the Cube from maintaining it’s wi-fi connection.
But I have the same Cube and none of those issues. Occasionally I’ll have a few frozen frames as a stream starts to buffer, but no persistent freezing. I use HEVC for a lot of my 1080p stuff and can’t tell what’s h.264 and what’s h.265 when it’s playing. I don’t love the subtitles functionality, but I’m confident that it’s an implementation thing and not a usability issue. I do have issues with played/not toggling correctly sometimes, but it’s usually an issue with the client not refreshing the status and not the status not being recorded correctly. If I check the web client on my server it shows correct P/nP info.
Thanks for the reply. But none of these are the issues.
1- connected with the ethernet cable and adapter that came with the cube.
2- right under the router in an open space
3- old fire 2nd gen worked fine in same spot
4- subs worked fine and no changes where made in old fire tv. Its more along the lines of starting a video without subs works but starting it with subs it freezes.
Everything is exactly the same as before the only diff is I changed to a fire cube 2nd gen
Still choppy but good enough for the moment. Plex should resolve all these issues ASAP.
Im actually trying out Emby because of this whole mess and so far soo good on the Fire TV Cube 2nd Gen.
Guess I’ll use that til this problem is resolved.
Found myself here after searching for the same issue. Going to try using the older version linked and see if that helps any. They need to have someone look into why this is happening on the 2nd gen Fire Cube, I use Plex every day and coming from the flawless playback on my Roku Ultra, this is disappointing.
Been over a month since I posted this topic and there is still no response or solution at all from the Plex team.
Crazy to think the Plex app sucks to work with latest Amazon “box”
As a lifetime subscriber this is very disappointing.
It has actually been two years since this issue first appeared. The Plex team isn’t going to fix this. You should either downgrade to v6.12 of the client or stop using Plex entirely.
What I’m having issue on the Fire Cube TV 2nd Gen, is that movies will play ok that have Dolby audio, but any titles that have DTS, the movie will not play at all. I can hit fast forward on the DTS movie and see the frame of the video that I fast forward to, but it will not play in motion. Anyone else see this?
This is correct, but it has been a known issue for two years. For whatever reason, Plex isn’t going to fix it, and they aren’t going to acknowledge your posts. Downgrade to v6.12 or switch to Jellyfin.
