Plex on ATV 4K Dolby Digital (EAC3) audio lacking depth compared to apple's dolby atmos itune movies

I notice that the audio with an encoded rip is not giving me full range frequency compared to the one that I purchased on iTunes Movie store on my Apple TV. The one from the iTunes store sounds much better and more complete. While the encoded one is lacking, especially in the low frequency. Bass response is hardly present. Any ideas why? I’m not sure if it’s a setting on my PMS or Plex Client that’s causing the issue or something else.

The movie is Maverick Top Gun and the audio info for the encoded version is as follows.

  1. Encoded Rip - is HEVC, DD Atmos (EAC3), Bitrate 768kbps, Audio Channel 5.1(side), Sampling Rate 48000Hz

Plex doesn’t support atmos or spatial audio. Apparently it’s coming (years in the making) but probably won’t work when it comes out.

Just use infuse.

I don’t want to have to spend $94 just to get another app just to play dolby atmos. I don’t understandhow infuse is able to play dolby atmos files, but plex can’t?

Plex have developed a new audio stack in beta.

Unfortunately it’s been pulled back as there were too many issues at launch. (only a few days ago). I’m sure there will be a more stable beta soon.

Regarding infuse I do get your point and paying such a large outlay. However I believe you can subscribe monthly (1/$€£ last I checked)

It may be worthwhile for a month or so until Plex sort out the issues.

Also in case you aren’t aware you can connect Infuse directly to your Plex Media Server.

Was there a post about it being pulled? I can’t find anything but noticed that it no longer is listed in the announcements thread.

Related to iOS but @bigwheel confirmed that tvOS will also be pulled til fixed

Thanks for the pointer!

At least there’s some hope in getting dolby atmos/spatial audio support built into Plex. If it’s possible with Infuse then I’m sure there’s a way to get it to work in Plex. I just hope it won’t be too long. I have a lot of dolby atmos media that I would love to take advantage of.

That’s the only thing that’s missing from the ATV version of Plex.

I am told we are going to re-enable for TVOS beta because the main issue with the new audio engine is airpods and spatial audio which mostly is used with iOS.

This is so other fixes for issues with TVOS beta the new engine addressed can be used and get feedback on in the beta. On TVOS you should be able to disable spatial audio if that bit is giving you issues.

This should happen sometime later today ( Probably morning in Europe)

That makes a lot of sense.
I have one or two issues outside of Spatial Audio with my latest gen Hompods but I’m putting those down to my stupidity in being an early tvOS 17 adopter.
Mostly sound cutting out completely and often.

Probably too early to be submitting logs for something that hasn’t even hit Public Beta yet.

Again thanks for keeping us all in the loop.

Does this mean we will finally be able to listen to dolby atmos media in the plex client for Apple TV 4K?

It does not, though it may help with adding that in the future.

I use my AirPods with my AppleTV all the time and spatial audio with Infuse sounds amazing. It absolutely should be present and fixed in the native client.

Plex really needs some catching up to do. I really don’t want to switch over to Infuse, but I have little to no choice currently. Hope a miracle happens soon with Plex for ATV.

I didn’t say it would not be fixed when we can but in there are other important fixes with new engine like audio sync for general playing that I would argue is more important than new spatial audio support.

Ah, ok yeah, no doubt.

I upgraded my speakers to 5.1.2 and enabled Dolby Atmos on my media receiver. Then I discovered, that Plex doesn’t feature this on my Apple TV. Since the sound via Blu-ray player is way better, I also hope for an update with Dolby Atmos. Would be great to have a rough timeline.
