Plex on DSM connecting to shared media on second DSM

Hello, I’ve had Plex running successfully for awhile, I’ve recently moved my main media storage to a DS1821+ on DSM7. I was able to get everything running. However, I also have a DS918+ (also on DSM7) that I would like to split a portion of my media off to. I’ve successfully created NFS and CIFS mounts where the 1821+ can see the folder and all sub-media on the 918+. However, when adding the folder to the Plex Media Server on the 1821+ Plex can only see the top folder, not the underlying media files. I’ve tried NFS v3 and v4 and Squash Settings Map Root to Admin and Map All Users to Admin. Each time i’ve tried stopping and starting the plex service, but when the folder is added on the 1821+ it still cannot see the content.

Does anyone have any ideas about this? I’ve searched all over the internet to get this far, but i’m pulling my hair out trying to understand the issue. I’m guessing it has something to do with the Plex user having read access to the NFS/CIFS mount. I’ve tried to do that through custom permissions, but the DSMs keep throwing out an error that the share isn’t compatible with an ACL. Am i missing something? Can i add the permssions some other way?

Best,
Jeromy

Jeromy,

Since there is no “PlexMediaServer” system internal user on the second machine, you need to grant permissions for everyone to read the media shared folders.

You also need to apply the permission to the folder where the mount occurs after you mount it (DSM 7 is really fussy now)

ChuckPa, Thank you very much for the adivce! This solved my problem!
