Plex doesn't see subfolders on Synology DSM 7.2

I have Plex Server running perfectly on both my QNAP and Windows desktop, but now that I’m trying to run it on my new Synology DS-923+, I’ve stumbled upon this situation:

When I try to add a folder to the media library, Plex only sees the root shared folder, but cannot see any of the folders below it.

For example, my base shared folder is /volume1/Sync. Inside, I have several different media folders, which I want to add manually to the media library. But Plex can only see the base folder /volume1/Sync, and nothing else. As if the subfolders didn’t exist.

Any views on how to make Plex see the subfolders? Thank you.

Server Version#: 1.32

Solved. DSM requires that Plex be granted R/W access to the folder.

@gsaito

Plex only needs Read access UNLESS you’re using DVR or Optimizing your media (where it writes to the media area)

Here’s the documentation (FAQ)

I have a similar problem. I am using DS 923+ with DSM 7.2, and have given the PlexMediaServer full access to my /video directory (which houses both my /Movies and /TV Shows folders). However, when I go to add a library, Plex only sees /volume1 and no way to navigate to the /Video folder. I have tried specifying it manually as /volume1/video or /volume1/video/Movies but it still doesn’t work and won’t find any of my mp4 or mkv files. Please help and let me know what I am doing wrong.

Thanks,
Rob

the ‘video’ folder, which is Synology-created, is always problematic.

Recommend:

  1. Create “Movies”, “TV” , and any other shared folders you need.
  2. Move your media there
  3. Now grant the permissions
  4. You’ll learn the permissions work and remain as you set them.

Thank you @ChuckPa , that did the trick. I just created a new share /volume 1/MyVideo and put my files there and voila, it worked. Not to open a can o’ worms, but why does it not work with the Synology-created folders?

If you have Synology apps installed (video station, audio station, photo station, etc), they claim exclusive control of the shared folder and block the plex user.

I have uninstalled these apps as well as media server, and am still getting the same issue: when I try to add a subfolder of my NAS in Plex, I can get as far as one folder deep and it lists no subfolders.

@charliechuck01

Linux is strict about file permissions. DSM is strict about enforcement.

When you can only see the topmost folder then you have a permissions problem.

Emphasis here is the 'Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files" when you grant PlexMediaServer permission to access the media files.
