I’m experiencing the same issue but stops after only 2 minutes (playing mostly 4k content). I had the “Terminate Sessions Paused” set to 1. I changed it to 0 and that addressed the issue.
This works great as a temporary fix but I have kids that continue to pause there sessions so hopefully PLEX pushes out a newer client release that allows the server setting to be adjusted again.
I’m told (from a different thread) v7.30.0.16082 (currently beta) Seems to be working without ANY issue.
You can find the 7.30 betas at the bottom of this thread. If you’re saavy you can enable “network debugging” in the shields developer settings and use adb connect [shield-ip] and adb install -r plex.apk to install the apk remotely over your lan. Otherwise there’s instructions here to link your google play account to the plex beta update channel. Hope this helps.
Any updates on this issue? I am using the latest Shield TV (2019) with the latest version of Plex 7.3 and still get the freezing problem 4 to 5 times in an hour. I can back out to the menu and then hit resume from whatever time it froze at and it will continue to play until the next freeze. It happens with both 4k and 1080p movies and is very frustrating. I have worked around this by using Xplay but I am committed to Plex as this is the only real issue I have had in over a year.
The Plex server is running on a Synology DS-918+ with latest DSM. I have attempted the “Terminate Session Paused” it was defaulted to 0 but changed to 15 saved and then reverted back to 0 just in case and no luck. Have also turned off the new player on Shield and attempted to play with the same results.
Thanks for the response. I will be away from my shield for the next few days but will try and get logs and any other assorted info you may require. Plex works great on LG, ATV and Mac. Only reason I bought the shield TV Pro 2019 was to produce the hidef sound. The constant freezing defeats that purpose.
Thanks Dave. I downloaded and installed the 7.31.0 beta and it works like a charm for about 45 minutes, then it froze up. I backed out of movie and then hit play again. Would not resume where it left off. First time shield tv has been close to being watchable. The beta is a huge inprovement but the issue still seems to be there. Movie was an H264 mkv. I might add that I could not find the exact beta version that you had mentioned in your post. The version I found was 7.31.0.16605
I’m a new Nvidia Shield owner and Plex user. I am experiencing similar issues to those described in this thread. I have two different remote libraries from which I have been streaming with varying degrees of success. I’ve tried numerous settings in the video options to no avail. When it freezes I have to exit out and restart - this sometimes requires multiple attempts. I’ve also noticed on many occasions that, on exiting a “frozen” stream, the movie menu does not recognize that I’ve been watching it (no “continue watching from” option) and I will need to exit back to the library menu and then re-select the movie.
After reading through this thread I decided to buy a lifetime Plex Pass so I could, at the very least, get access to client beta releases. However, now that I’ve signed up I am not seeing any option under “My Apps” in the play store to install any new versions of the client. Installed version is 7.30.2.16712.
Can someone advise on what I need to do to upgrade to one of the 7.31 beta images so I can test and contribute to the thread?
After some wrangling I was able to get 7.31.0.16802 loaded in. Certain things seem better. I was able to watch one film end-to-end that had been unable to play beyond the first 10 seconds previously. Additionally, general start times (and recovery from rewind and fast-forward) seem significantly better than 7.30.2.16712. However, in testing an H264 transcode playback that gave me numerous problems last night I was able to replicate a freeze at the exact same moment in playback. This freeze is accompanied by the generic “Network speed” error message. I have the client capped at 8Mbps (non-adaptive) for remote playback and the server in question has a 20Mbps upstream connection.
Playing the same file back on my laptop works just fine with no freezes.
Please let me know what other data I can provide to assist.
So my first post is 1d old and the other is 19hrs. I’ve dropped $120 on PlexPass mostly so I could become a beta tester in hopes of making the Nvidia Shield Pro + Plex a viable home entertainment solution. Paying to beta-test… Suffice it to say things aren’t working out quite the way I’d hoped with the Shield.
I’ve now added a third friend’s Plex server and attempted to stream a 720P file that reports needing 512Kbps but pauses frequently despite seemingly abundant bandwidth.
The icing on the cake? The same 1080p video that was freezing every few minutes, and dropping audio via Plex on the Shield, has been streaming trouble-free to my laptop whilst being cast to my TV via a stand-alone Chromecast.
This certainly seems to be an issue inherent to the Shield and/or the Plex App specifically on the Shield.
I would love to know there’s hope that Plex will eventually work well on the Nvidia Shield TV Pro. As it stands for me the Nvidia Shield TV Pro with Plex is exceedingly frustrating when it comes to remote streaming and I’m now wondering if it’s even possible for me to return the Shield if these issues can’t be resolved.
Remote streaming from various devices to Plex on my Nvidia Shield TV Pro remains very unreliable. I’ve given up troubleshooting at this point but can say this:
When attempting to play remote streams:
Best - Local client on Windows laptop & cast to TV (mind you, the laptop is wireless, with worse network performance than the Shield, which I have hard-wired)
Middle - Kodi on Shield with Plex Add-on - Streams tend to experience frame stutters, making this annoying.
Worst - Plex directly on Nvidia Shield. Rather than stutter or buffer, streams often stop completely with no user feedback.
None of this happens with my locally stored movies, which all stream flawlessly.
Out of curiosity, do you have the New Player enabled in the advanced settings on your Plex client app on the Shield? I ask because you say your local streaming works flawlessly and I have to disable the New Player to be able to stream local files without any errors. I am using a 2019 Shield Tube, not Pro.
I should update as well. My Shield TV Pro 2019, updated to the latest Beta of the Plex Client, is back to freezing 1080p and 4K streams multiple times during an hour and a half movie. New player on or turned off.
I have generated some logs and will forward. Shield is wired and I will likely swap out cables for Cat 6 - the current cables are Cat 6 but is the only thing on my Gigabit network that I haven’t swapped out. Might also try 5G wireless to see if it encounters issues.
My Apple TV, LG C8, MACBook Pro and IOS, along with a couple of Roku’s in our Suite all use the Plex clients without issue. Shield using XPlay also streams fine. Plex Client for Shield however is close to unwatchable because of freezes.
I am using a Synology DS-918+ Plex Server, and remote streaming 1080p works well to some offsite Roku’s. Had I realized the issues with the Shield Client, I would have waited until Apple came out with an ATV that properly handled HD Audio Streams.
All video media is MKV at varying resolutions and bit rates. However, Shield Client seems to struggle play any of them reliably. Subtitles can be on or off and the freezing continues.
I got the 2019 Nvidia Shield tube because I heard/read it was the best Plex client. Also, it seems like the only client that supports HD audio streams other then a Windows PC (thanks to licencing or some such).
Anyway, I have been extremely disappointed in the client not able to basically stream anything reliably. be it 4K or dvd rip. Other services like Netflix, Disney+, Prime 4K looks amazing and atmos work great! I was noticing that in the plex server dashboard, current streams were not showing up from the shield, which I thought was odd. Trying the pre-installed VLC with dnla from plex works ok but isn’t ideal.
After a bit of googling, I have stumbled across this thread.
I am running the latest plexpass version of plex media server (native on Debian) and latest stable client. The shield is connected via gig network.
As others here have stated, turning off the 15min timeout for paused streams sorta helped. Other frustrating oddities were still happening however, because of not reporting to plex that something is being watched/streamed. I would not get progress of the current watched video. I would have to manually mark as watched to get to the next episode for tv or if I wanted to continue watching a movie elsewhere, it was still marked as unwatched.
Other here have said to switch the video player to the old version. seems counter intuitive but ok, I’ll try that. Boom! Everything works as expected! everything from DVD to 4K/UHD works great. HD audio streams included. Yes, this is local content which may not help others with remote content issues, but this should be the real workaround for this issue: “enable old video player”
(I have the timeout for paused streams turned back on)
So I’ve been having this problem on my Nvidia Shield Pro 2019 (the new version), just updated my app to 8.0.0.17276 (cef199a0), and the only thing that fixed this issue for me was switching to the old player.
Unfortunately, I’m not able to grab logs from my SHIELD, but I just want people to know that there is a workaround, even if it’s not ideal.
I have found my answer to what has been a problem for a couple of months. When running the Plex client on a wifi 5G5, connection I had freezes every 5 to 10 minutes. The same issue on a wired connection with cat 5e cables and a 10/100 T switch. Decided to replace cat 5e with cat 6 cable and go direct from a port on my router to my Shield TV Pro. That is a gig connection and I have now gone an entire week without issue - at all.
As mentioned before I have used both 4K and 1080p MKV files and all now work great. I believe my issue came from the HD Audio making my streams too heavy but just a guess. Please note I am still using the new player. Thanks to all those who have posted here, the shield now works very well along with my other clients.
This continues happening for me as well. Switching to the old player fixes it.
I took a look at my graphs in the dashboard and can see the problem playing out. The first image is what playback looks like when streaming from my Huawei P20 Pro, the second is what it looks like when I stream on my 2019 Shield Tube. Note the spike in traffic that then falls to zero…
