Plex on TrueNAS – “A problem with a core component” – completely stuck

Hi,

I’m at my wits’ end here. Until recently I was running a Plex server on a Windows system without any issues. I’ve now rebuilt my setup and switched to a TrueNAS system. Everything else is set up according to best practices and works perfectly – except Plex.

When I install Plex from the Apps section, the deployment runs through without errors and the app shows as “Running.” However, when I open the WebGUI, I’m taken to the setup screen and immediately get this message:

A problem with a core component of the Plex Media Server was detected.

I’ve tried everything I can think of:

  • Completely deleting and reinstalling

  • Leaving all settings at default

  • Manually creating data/config/log directories

  • Trying with GPU passthrough and without

  • Using both the Plex Pass image and the regular one

  • Installing with and without a claim token

No matter what I do, the same error appears. I’ve Googled, asked ChatGPT, watched videos – nothing works. I can’t even get to any useful logs from the WebUI to troubleshoot further.

According to the TrueNAS Apps page, the version is 1.2.5.

I’m desperate for help here. If anyone has run into this and knows what’s going wrong, please let me know – I can’t move forward until this is resolved.

Thanks in advance!

We are aware of the problem and are already looking into it. Right now I am collecting reports and information (your report is one of them) and we have people looking into this issue. Thank you for the report, we will have more information as soon as it is available.

I’m having the same problem I was using 1.2.6. I have done and tried the same things to no avail. If there are any logs that would be useful let me know and I can send them. Thanks!

Are you able to bypass it be selecting one of the tabs on the screen and continue on? We still in testing internally, but based on the times we have been able to replicate this looks a bit like an issue in one of the elements that is trying to be drawn on that screen in the web client and nothing more. We have not found any issues in general usage and while the messaging looks a bit ominous, once bypassed everything appears to be working and functioning. However, we are still in a testing phase so any reports contrary to these initial findings is worth calling out as it will help here. Thanks!

Yes, once you continue on the three tabs (name, media library, finish) it’s all good, but it happens every time you open the webui. I’ve had some issues after reading a file that it then says it’s unavailable, but I haven’t tested enough to see if its a persistent issue or it was a small quirk of setting up the media server

I just installed tonight (TrueNAS) and experienced the same issue described here. Clicking on the tabs above allowed me to continue but it was disconcerting to see the error message immediately during install.

I am getting the same issue with my TrueNas server. Click on the tabs allows you to complete the setup however ever time you go back to app.plex.tv you are brought back to the setup screen and need to click through again.

Seconding this. I am getting this issue on Proxmox after installing using a helper script.

Along with being presented with the setup section every time the WebUI opens, all clients say the libraries are offline (but they still seem to work when entering them)

I also cannot share any libraries with other users, as there is “No connected servers” on my account

This allows you to get in.

However, every time you sign out and back into the WebUI it prompts for setup again.

I am a new user, my server was working perfectly on Windows. I was able to access web portal with no errors. Today I started running server on unraid machine. Now I am faced with the same error you are describing. Server runs, however I get the error when logging into web app. Other than me running server on new machine, I am aware an update was released a few days ago…

I’m another one with this same problem with a fresh install of Truenas Scale and Plex….. the error is “A problem with a core component of the Plex Media Server was detected.”

I’ve tried Fresh Installs of TRUENAS SCALE with the following versions: Nothing works, same error on all versions.

23.10.2 (Cobia)

24.04.2 (Dragonfish)

24.10.2 (Electric Eel)

25.04.2 (Fangtooth).

PLEX App Version:1.42.1.10054-f333bdaa8

Version:1.2.6

My other TrueNAS Scale machine running version 25.04.2 and PLEX App Version: v1.41.9.9961-46083195d Version: v1.2.5

Works like it should…..

Please fix this bug in PLEX!

Thank you!

J
