I have a htpc with plex server installed and use plex apps on apple tv 4, Roku 3, fire tv and ps4. All these devices are wired to my home network and plex is looking at my iTunes library for content. My son recently took the Roku 3 to college and wants to access our movies from his dorm room, do I need plex pass? Do I need to anything more that turn on remote access?
No, you do not need a Plex pass for remote access.
downloaded plex app for ipad, signed in, it would only allow me to watch 1 minute of a movie in my library, and that was on wifi on my home network. Can you suggest a good tutorial on how to access the movies remotely? Do I have to do anything on the Roku?

The iPad app is a purchase, unless you have Plex Pass. it’s a one-off payment to unlock which will lift the one-minute “trial”.
The Roku should work remotely without any issues.
Cheers.
is there anything I need to do on the Roku 3 for it to access our movies remotely, trying to make it as simple as possible for my son when he wants to use it. I have turned remote access on on the pc client
have it already signed in on the Roku 3 and make sure you are connectable thru your router and you should be set. Do you have enugh upload for him to be able to watch remotely off you ?
The roku 3 has already signed in and watched movies while it was in our house and on our network. The upload speed I am getting from my networking is about 27 MB per second I’m assuming that should be fast enough. The files that are being accessed or MP4’s that are roughly anywhere from 3 to 7 GB each. Is there anything my son would need to do on the Roku for remote access?
