Plex Player for Windows: Cannot download movies, but CAN download TV shows

Server Version#: 1.40.0.7998
Player Version#: 1.87.2.87-87488d5a

I’m running Windows 11. For some reason I cannot download movies from my server. I can, however, download TV shows just fine. I’m logged in to my admin account on both my laptop (player) and desktop (server). This is a relatively new problem. I did not have this issue a few months ago. I cannot be more specific as to the timing of when this problem began, as I only download content when I’m going to be travelling.

When I attempt to download a movie, the button simply does nothing. No pop up window, no initializing a download… nothing. When I click the download button for a TV show, it pops up the download options window. I can download movies on my android device, and to my laptop using the web app. The native windows app, however, refuses to cooperate.

I have logged out and logged back in, and have also uninstalled and reinstalled the client.

This will require application logs to diagnose further. Be sure to include those mentioned in the logs related to downloads.

Plex.5.log (235.7 KB)
Plex.log (142.1 KB)
Plex.1.log (144.4 KB)
Plex.2.log (206.8 KB)

Hopefully this helps, thank you!

The logs related to downloads are missing. The support article I linked does mention these.

Sorry for the delay in responding! Enclosed are the requested logs.

I also tested downloading movies on a different windows device (running win 10) and it worked just fine. It appears related to my surface pro laptop (running win 11) for some reason. I do not have another win 11 device to test the download button on.

If it helps, clicking “download” on my laptop produces no response whatsoever from the plex desktop client (regardless whether it is from the 3 dot menu on the poster, or when I click the big download button in the movie’s page). It behaves exactly as if I never clicked download at all.

Plex Media Server.log (1.2 MB)

Those are logs from the Plex Media Server. The logs related to downloads are named similar but in a different path (read the above linked support article carefully).

I’m normally not this bad at following directions, I promise.

I am taking the below logs from the following paths on my laptop (where I am trying to download to)

C:\Users[DEFAULT]\AppData\Local\Plex\Logs
Plex.log (149.1 KB)

and

C:\Users[DEFAULT]\AppData\Local\Plex\Plex Media Server\Logs
Plex Media Server.log (112.8 KB)

I unsuccessfully attempted to download Argylle with no reaction, and successfully started the download for Yellowstone season 1 episode 1

Well, this is a new one:
Subscription: Movies can only be recorded into movie libraries

On your server, what type of library section is section 2? (If you use the web browser and just hover the mouse over each of the sections, you’ll see the URL ends with ?source=2 where that 2 is the section number)

If it is a movies section, then somehow the client got this information wrong. I’m not sure what is the best route forward for you. The client could be corrected to handle this situation but I’m not sure you want to wait that long. You can delete the directory C:\Users\[DEFAULT]\AppData\Local\Plex\Plex Media Server which will delete your downloads and start it afresh which should resolve the issue (you won’t lose other prefs nor be logged out if you delete only this directory).

Thank you for the help! Section 2 was, indeed, movies and deleting the directory you referenced fixed the problem.
