Unable to Play from Libraries used by LiveTV-DVR Feature

Server Version#: Version 1.13.9.5439
Player Version#: 5.5.1.
HD HomeRun Quatro
Synology NAS (for storage, not PMS)

As of this PMS update, I am having trouble viewing recordings stored in folders used by the LiveTV / DVR feature. All other folders appear to work well.

The inability to access the library altogether manifests in iOS. The Roku player has a work-around. The plex-web interface continues to work, but displays inaccurate information about unwatched episodes.

iOS
On the libraries used by the Live DVR feature, I receive a message stating server (named CERROS-MEDIA in my installation) is unavailable. The behavior exists when navigating the folders using the shows icon at the bottom of the screen. Folders not used by the Live/DVR are accessible. All folders are stored in the same tree on the Synology NAS. Newly recorded programs are available via the home icon and play correctly. The message I receive is:

Roku
The Roku interface displays a series of selection icons, but no information about the recordings and no response when one of the icons is selected. The home screen works properly for newly added content. (I don’t include the news library as part of my home screen, so navigating to the news library is the only way to get to the recordings). However, if I navigate to the play button on the left, the recording does play. There is no way to determine which recording will play though.

WebPlayer
I am able to play the videos from the webplayer. When navigating to the library, the webplayer shows inaccurate episode counts for the shows. For example, there is only 1 unwatched episode of the program, but it displays 10 episodes in the unplayed count.

@Shermanh4 has pointed out this is the same issue he is having here:

I will update on his post.

Thank you for posting and for including the screenshots and photo of the Roku screen. That sums it up well. I am using the Live TV/DVR feature and the library I am having trouble with is indeed the one my scheduled recordings use. I didn’t check the other libraries on Roku to see if they worked correctly since the TV/DVR library is the only one I use a on a daily basis.

I also noticed a weird count for one of my DVR recordings. I believe there was one local news episode, but the overlay in the corner said “10”. When I clicked into it, it showed just the one episode.

I am glad to provide log files and step through debug if we can get help from someone at Plex.

Also, if we can’t get help with debugging and fixing this, can we at least have instructions on how to downgrade to the previous working version?

So here is a workaround that worked for me. Move all the Plex recorded TV folders onto another folder or disk. I have a Windows Server 2016 device so I just moved the folders out of the Plex folder into another folder in the same or another array. This took minimum time as Windows just redirects the directory structure. Then go into Plex (recorded TV) and select “Scan Library Files”. After this then select “Empty Trash”. Now move all the recorded Plex TV folders back into where Plex expects them and select “Scan Library Files”. All the recordings will now show up in the Roku display screen as expected. You may need to move a few directories at a time depending on your disk space. A lot of work for this screw-up but wife is now happy!

Have you needed to do this more than once? It seems every time I get a new recording, the library is messed up, and I have to move files in and out or create a new library. This is really frustrating because it means anything I record from OTA will mess up Plex every time.

Do you know if there is anyway to downgrade Plex to a previous version?

I know of no way to downgrade. Wouldn’t that be nice?

I switched to the Amazon FireStick and it seems to be playing nice with the newest PMS release. I can see all of my DVR recorded shows.

It could be that the PMS change was deliberate and the solution is really an update to the iOS, Roku, and Web clients.

Plex has been pretty reliable over the past months for me. What a disappointment that they botched things up.

Verify you have not an actually corrupted database file.

  1. activate debug logging (not ‘verbose’!)
  2. quit Plex Server
  3. wait 1 minute
  4. start Plex Server
  5. wait 5 minutes
  6. fetch log files and attach them here

Or inspect them yourself. Take a look at the Plex Media Server.log file and seek for messages about database corrupt or malformed.
If you find these, you may have to repair your database.
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201100678-repair-a-corrupt-database/

I checked the log and found no mention of malformed or corrupt.

Same here. I actually turned the log on and let it run overnight and did not see other string in the log file. I don’t think our databases are corrupted. I think there is a bug in the newest beta version.

I do see a lot of errors like this:

Oct 13, 2018 16:40:21.698 [32776] DEBUG - BPQ: generator 2226 is in failed state
Oct 13, 2018 16:40:21.698 [32776] DEBUG - Sync: sync list 26068189, sync item 28101705 is in failed state

Here is the 5 minute log:

Plex Media Server.log (1.9 MB)

You are correct. I did not wait long enough for a new recording. When I got home tonight the new shows that were recorded screwed up the display on Roku again. I also can’t use the iPad for viewing any recorded shows since this new release as it reports there is no connection to the server when clearly these is because all other media works. The only way I know of to go back one release is to uninstall the defective Plex version and reinstall the older version. All database info would be wiped and need to be recreated which could take days. I have done this once before a few months ago.
I can browse by folder and find the recorded show which shows up correctly on the Roku but when I try to play it Roku crashes back to the main Roku screen. The plan C to play recorded programs using the Roku is to go to the “On Deck” where the program shows up and plays but this is a terrible solution.
This was a real screw-up for Plex

I’m having this same issue. I found you can get to shows via ‘newly added’ etc. Thanks for the other work around. Guys, this is unacceptable and needs addressed.

Had the same issue, tried moving things to new folders but that only worked for a few hours, downgraded back to 1.13.8 last night and so far no issues. Seems to be a bug in 1.13.9.

Forgive me, but I didn’t realize you could down grade? Did you just run an installer you happened to have on your machine?

I found the old installer using the way back search site and force installed it. It seems downgrading isn’t recommended by Plex but, given the circumstances and lack of response from Plex, it feels like this is the only option.

At the risk of database corruption
 “excellent Smithers
” thanks JimBirmingham.

Might suggest to others to make a backup first

How did you “force install” it? When I run the installer I get a “Setup Failed” error, “Another version of this product is already installed.”

I am using linux. I did an rpm -Uvh --force rpmname.rpm

Lucky  I have considered running Plex in Linux on a VM on my Windows 10 machine

Has anyone made progress on this issue or been able to reach someone at Plex?
