Plex progress not syncing properly

Hi guys,

I have plex server hosted on a QNAS. I like to go back and finish watching / watch what I haven’t seen yet. I’m finding myself going back to movies, and because of my bad memory, I might watch half a movie before I realize I’ve seen it (HAH).

It seems that certain devices show different status. Like I may finish a movie one night on my Roku tv, then load plex via browser the next day and it thinks I’m only halfway through.

Any fix for this? Thanks!

Web has this issue due to the way browsers cache data, that if you stop playback without actually hitting the stop button in the controls, it will remember where you were the next time you restart web.

Thanks for the reply. I actually discovered that a couple months ago and have started using the x whenever I stop watching.

However , there’s no x like that on plex for Roku or fire stick. Should I just hit the stop button each time I finish when watching on the Roku?

The Roku and Fire Stick do not have this issue. When you stop playback, PMS should remember where it stopped and offer to restart at that point. However, if you intentionally pause it and leave it paused, that client will stay at that location, unless you the app closes (restart device, force stop app, etc.) or you’ve set the timeout in PMS to close paused sessions. Otherwise, the app will stay at that spot and just continue from there the next time the app is active, regardless if you finished playing somewhere else.

So last night, I finished watching a movie on my Roku tv via plex and I made sure to hit the STOP button when I was done.

I’m now checking it from my Windows 10 chrome browser, and it thinks I left off where I stopped watching it on the browser, before transitioning to the Roku TV.

Anything else I can try to get these to sync up properly?

Di you hit stop in the browser before you moved over to the Roku? It’s the browser not stopping that causes this issue, not the Roku.

Thanks for the reply. I believe I hit the “x”, which I normally hit in the browser, rather than stop. I can try hitting stop again. Do they have a different effect?

The X in my image above is the stop button. If you are hitting the X to close the browser tab/window, that is what causes the browser to return to that same spot next time.

In that case, I have been using the correct one. The x down in the player controls. The other day, when the movie I finished was showing as mid progress, I had used a shift+f5 refresh of the page then hit the x and that seemed to do it, but normally hitting the x didn’t. I’ll keep trying to see if I notice it again
