i am having an issue with my setup. I am def not the only one,. and Nobody has a solution.
PLex on QNAP
Nord VPN on QNAP
AT&T INternet
i have tried opening the port on router, but NORD doesnt support port forwarding.
any topic made on this i have pretty much tried (minus scripting and developer stuff)
I have family and friends that want to use it but sometimes it doesnt work and im frustrated.
I have also tried Dynamic IP address, which isnt working (for plex only)
My question is if i buy a dedicated IP for Plex will all my problems go away?
i would rather pay $70 and not hear anyone complaining and spending hours of trying to solve this damn problem.
We’ll need a bunch of details about what NORD is being used to accomplish on the QNAP. It’s probably obvious to you, but it’s not immediately clear whether you have a VPN server or client running.
All the gory network details you want to provide will help.
Screenshots of config screens etc, redacted for privacy.
QNAP Network GUI also has maybe 5 screens to include.
PMS version, QTS version, NAS model
keep it coming.
hope this is a foot in right direction. basically here is whats happening.
my Movies on QNAP. Plex Server on QNAP.
VPN on QNAP. I want to go outside the VPN for plex. It doesnt need those restrictions. I want to keep VPN on the QNAP though for download station, etc.
The IP seems to be reassigning itself every so often, thus locking other users out. How can they coexist with minimal headache basically is what my question is.
thanks, let me know if you need more info. i tried my best
was good and probably enough to make some progress.
The tl;dr is maybe it would work with 2 NICs, but you’re configuration
is going to better understood on their forums.
I’ll try to explain what I know.
Yes sir, that’s fairly common. On your QNAP you have a DDNS service from QNAP called
myQNAPcloud, giving authorized users remote access to the server and giving you
better SSL/TLS support. It acts as a Certificate of Authority for its domain that you
are a part of. Your QNAP gets a FQDN. Your actual IP changes occasionally like u said.
On top of that working system…
You are then layering an OpenVPN client to a NORD VPN server. It’s not clear from your second screenshot whether that VPN connection was configured to be your default gateway, rerouting all your external traffic that used to go through myQNAPcloud now through NORD.
The other few pages of your QNAP network administration GUI called Network & Virtual Switch would have shown those details and the number of NICS you have and how they might be configured.
Plex has the ability to set Settings - Show Advanced - Network - Preferred Network Interface .
Given those details, I think you have enough to take this to Moogle and Toxic17,
unless there’s folks here who see this.
Yes i have teh NORD VPN as default gateway…probably why i am having issues. but i dont want the “download station traffic to go on the other IPs” if that makes sense.,… And yea i think i understand you. except for Moogle and Toxic17?
Yes it does. That’s why I tried to put a VPN client on my QNAP for Plex (I’ve moved beyond BT). I didn’t want Plex using my home IP address for searching all the metadata of my collection. Asking about every single movie and TV show every three days throws my privacy out the window, as IMDB and TVDB undoubtedly sell that information.
I’m not the person enjoying the bucket of tastey fried food. I’m the chicken!
In the end it failed to work though. The VPN always comes up after Plex, which is blasting out searches from the get go, and any attempts to adjust the boot order resulted in no Gateway. I’ll try again when I move up to QTS-4.4.1 in a few weeks once it proves to be stable.
Gurus of the QNAP forum. The first guy wrote the unofficial FAQ over there,
Moogle Stiltzkin
GUys i really appreciate your help but i dont exactly follow what i am supposed to do here.
i am very new to QNAP/NAS in general. I am a basic troubleshooter as to where i can search and figure things out if its enough but this one is beyond me. ( also dont know jack about IP stuff.)
Can one of you please kind of tell me step by step what to do? on the FAQ it didnt look like much of those involved VPN or anything…unless i missed it.
I would register on the QNAP forums where Moogle, OneCD, and Toxic17 hang out.
Then I’d make some replies to their threads, and comment on how their posts have been
helpful. It’s like introducing yourself without expressing frustration. The other effect is it
will lift some restrictions off your new account (like being locked out of the forums if you edit
your preview post too much hah!)
The next day or so I’d make a new thread over there about avoiding a VPN for certain apps,
with everything I’ve learned so far and all the evidence.
They have extraordinary knowledge about QNAP, VPNs, and routing, and their
posts are followed by others who may chime in with an answer.
People here don’t specialize as much in configuring QNAP’s operating system.
As I don’t have 4.4.1, I can’t test how it responds to VPN anyway, but I was hoping
to elucidate the details enough for others to spot.
I have NordVPN and use Plex over VPN without issues. My setup is different. Plex server runs on Synology NAS. I have Asus RY86U and Merlin firmware installed. I run OpenVPN client to NordVPN on the router.
Synology NAS is connected to router 1GB port. VPN is always on. When at home the Plex server is accessed locally by many devices including iPhones and Sony tv. Remote just works too. No issues.
Thanks for the info. Do you have a FQDN that you paid for, pointing to the Synology?
If not, how do your remote clients know the IP address that NORD has given you?
When you setup your remote access in Plex with your VPN IP it is stored on Plex relay server. When you remote you anthenticaye first or it auto sign in and the app will pick up the IP for your server. Then redirect.
