Plex Reading Shows on my Win10 Computer = Wrong Shows I Don't Even Have? Help!

Server Version#:
Player Version#:

Using it on a new LG 55" Smart TV with udated Plex app installed.

My TV shows are located on a common PC networked in our home, divided into groups like TV Shows and Movies and in each category I would have it broken down like

TV Shows
The Big Bang Theory
Season 1
S01E01

New install, first time using Plex. When it first went in, it was fine. The shows showed up and played.

Now today I go to watch let’s say “The Big Bang Theory” and instead I have images of “A Bit of Fry and Laurie” and the show is labeled as “Smallville” (which I don’t have or watch) and when I click play it’s “Teen Aqua Hunger Force” (Which I don’t have or watch)

Something is very wrong. I just want to watch shows on my networked PC…

Screenshots of your file/naming system and library setup will help immensely with this.

So what you’re saying is, one show is showing metadata from several different other shows (e.g. Titel is show 1, poster is show 2, title when playing an episode is show 3, …)? That’s … pretty weird. I have had a few instances of just utterly wrong matches and stuff, but never something like this.

A few basic things I would try:

  • refresh the metadata of the show (the option is under the three button menu). Does it stay the same? Or does it at least get all the metadata from one show now? If so, which one; the correct one or still a wrong one?
  • fix match. Either it’ll suggest the correct show, then you can select that; or you can search for the title of the correct show and then it should find it. Then, it would refresh the metadata again, hopefully now pulling that of the correct show.
  • still wrong? I’d remove the show completely from the Plex library folder; then rescan the library and empty trash and bundles - basically, you want plex to remove the show and forget everything it knew about it. Then I’d move the show back into the correct folder, scan and have it add it completely new.

(Btw., before moving it back, check that it’s named correctly. I use the official naming scheme for everything, so the file path would be something like

E:\Media\TV-Shows\Seinfeld\Season 1\Seinfeld - S01E01 - Title of the episode.mp4

Specifically, the file name is not only S01E01, but also contains the name of the show (and the title of the episode, but I believe that part’s not hugely important).
I’ve been faring pretty well using this scheme; especially when it comes to TV-shows this makes it a lot easier for plex to find everything. When I did have problems, it was usually because of some weirdness on TVDB, with specials or differences between DVD/airdate order.)

  • if that still doesn’t help, or all or at least the majority of your shows are screwed up like this, I’d probably nix the whole library, and set it up anew. But somebody else who knows more about plex troubleshooting might have some other ideas of what to try before that.

First and foremost:
Verify that your library points only to the folder TV-Shows
It must not point to a deeper subfolder.

Then, go to

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheTVDB

In there, grab the line ‘Local Media Assets’ with your mouse and drag it downwards, so it ends up being at the bottom of the stack of active agents.
Repeat the same under

  • Settings - Server - Agents - Shows - TheMovieDatabase
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - Plex Movie
  • Settings - Server - Agents - Movies - TheMovieDatabase

Afterwards, re-check your file and folder naming, these must follow the example given above.

Then, perform the Plex Dance with all shows involved in the mixup.

Where do I find this exactly? Do you mean on/from the computer itself?
