Hi, I’m pretty new to Plex, but I looked around the FAQ guides and the forums and couldn’t find anything helpful, so I’m posting here.
We have a collectors edition DVD set for “Oceans Alive: Kingdom of the Coral Reef”. it’s a 5 disc set of 20 total 22 minute episodes of various underwater documentary stuff.
When I backed up the files, I put them in my directory for TV shows and they didn’t sync onto the server. on my first pass of troubleshooting I learned that Content is validated against https://www.themoviedb.org/ - When searching here, Oceans Alive is listed as a movie.
as a test, I moved the files over to my movies directory and after a sync, all of the content is now showing up on my player but none of it is matching correctly. All 20 episodes are saved locally as their episode names, which do not exist in the movie db.
My next thought was maybe I could manually match each file with just the series name, but instead of nesting them or anything it just seemed to have each one overwrite the previous.
So that’s where I am right now, idk if anyone else here has this specific dvd set or if anyone has encountered any similar issues, but I’m hoping there’s a quick and easy way to tell Plex that “yes this is really a TV series”.
Whether a video can be added as a movie or a TV show episode in Plex, is primarily dependent on how it is listed on TheMovieDB.
If you look for your DVD there, you’ll see that it is only listed as a 10-hr movie, not as a TV show.
If you don’t want to supply all the metadata yourself, you will have to follow that and name your files as a movie (and place them into a movie-type library in Plex).
Movies and TV shows require fundamentally different approaches to file naming and organization in Plex.
An alternative strategy would be to name your files indeed as a TV show. Then make sure it remains “unmatched” in Plex and use the “Edit” button and supply the metadata by hand.
(One could try to add it to TheMovieDB as a TV show. But if it never was actually aired as such, chances are that it’ll get removed from there by admins.)
I figured the better option would be to add it correctly to tmdb ( Oceans Alive: Kingdom of the Coral Reef (TV Series 2011- ) — The Movie Database (TMDB) ), so other people won’t run into the same issue in the future, though the series still isn’t showing up when I add it to my TV Show directory. I assume Plex needs to sync with TMDB first? any idea how often that happens?
I am pretty sure this was a straight-to-vhs thing, so never “aired” anywhere, so to speak. Each episode has a proper name and synopsis. Was there a more correct way to list this on tmdb?
Just wanted to circle back on this. It’s been 4 days; the corrected series pages are still up on TMDB but it’s still not showing up on my TV directory. I found other resources that said Plex only takes 24 hours to sync from TMDB, so I am not sure what else to do now.
Filter for Duplicate episodes. They might’ve gotten conflated with episdoes of a different show.
If that is the case, you better check the folder name and either use the Split action or perform the Plex Dance.
