Hello everyone, Now that I have my PMS running on the latest OS on my synology I need to see why my remote access keeps dropping. It seems to work just fine for a random amount of time b/c it goes offline (for remote access).
I run through a few of these connect/disconnect cycles, shut down plex and took the logs.
Do you have multiple port forwarding rules going to the same local IP in your router? I see it trying to map 32402 and 32400, or were you just trying different ports?
I was just trying different ports to see if anything worked. I even tried UPnP to no avail. I read some other posts that it could be something with plex.direct domain being blocked (I did not see those blocks in Opnsense or NextDNS logs though.
I will say this that this is fairly inconsistent. Sometimes it works really well and other times very sporadically. It’s one of the reasons I am looking for a more stable way of remote accessing my media files (and sharing). I just can’t depend on Plex to always work. The one way this issue is consistent is that I have the same problem if I run PMS on my Synology, NVidia Shield, Docker or Unraid. They will will just start working again until the next time it stops. I loathe to update my server/firewalls with the fear that this will bring down PMS.
That’s a new one I have not seen a reference to the external (source) port being 49200. I had though that you needed 32400 to whatever internal port you had your Plex server listening to (Ex: 32400 to 32400 or 32401 etc…). Is 49200 something new?
only the internal port needs to be 32400. Nothing special about 49200. The external can be anything, as long as it is not used by some other service. (like if you play video games on the computer it may use particular ports) Many folks just use 32400, 32401, 32402 etc just because it is easier to remember.
Got it! Thanks for clearing that up. So my external access was working for almost 3 days with no issues, I rebooted my server to and it’s back to disconnecting. /sigh. And no changes were made to the server or port forwarding.
I have absolutely no option to enter an external IP address or port? I so frustated, that after going to DSM 7 the whole remote access broke. I have one port forwarded in my router which is my local IP address with the 32400 port. It has worked fine for the last 3 years, but I should have never updated to DSM 7 ffs!! How can I fix this
New to plex board and for the first time, chiming in any form. I too am the victim of this DSM 7 update debacle. But Plex is working well after following the forum threads here correctly. Locally it’s working normal. Now problem lies with Remote Access as I have friends whom I shared library with, are now streaming my movie collection in low quality, because Plex remote access forcibly converts them, due to remote access not staying connected.
I don’t use the Synology fw so that doesn’t apply. I’ve had the remote connection issues ever since I started using plex. On a baremetal PC running linux and just Plex, on various Synology/QNAP, on my NVidia Shield, Unraid, app or docker. I’ve tried a number of fw/routers (Orbi, PA-220, Unifi USG, pfsense/opnsense, etc…). I don’t upgrade or make changes to my router settings b/c of Plex. I only update when forced to. It will work fine for days, weeks and even many months then just stop working for awhile. It may or may not start working again often with me making no changes.
My wifi router from huawei and I have UPNP enabled. Before the update and this whole Plex shamble, it was working fine where Remote access was stable. I was able to stream atleast 720p when out of home (4G network maybe slow in some areas). Now the remote access keeps showing an x with double NAT being the reason. Did manual port, did port forwarding and switch off UPnP. All this, while rebooted my router and NAS for good effect. Still to no avail. Currently relying on the Plex’s relay feature but that does not stream good quality when streaming outside the confines of my home due to its own bandwidth limited offer.
I’m hoping (saw your post other threads) that your version of Plex would solve this problem. Plex is working fine on the DSM 7 (using Plex.tv’s specific version to the DSM 7), now my only issue is Remote Access. And I’m willing to start a new thread about this so we can go from scratch (still new to the Plex forum board, and have no idea how to make a post, I think I don’t have that privilege yet).
I have used pfsense but not in over a year or so. I currently use opnsense but the configs may be similar enough. I’ve been doing some troubleshooting and at least initially I think it may be something to do with opnsense or at least how I have it configured.
I don’t think this is a PLEX issue for me. I was able to setup a different gateway path (using a Unifi USG/Unifi Switch and different ISP static IPs) and when I connect my PLEX server to that the remote access works fine. Also using various port check websites it indicates that the IP with OPNsense the port(s) are closed but going through the USG they are open.
