Ditto to what xtrap225 offered. Plex on the Chromecast with Google TV is failing the wife test in my house due to the bug, so anything that I can do to help get it resolved I’m willing to do.
I thought I would chime in here. Not a regular poster mainly due to the stability of my experience.
However since upgrading to GCCwGTV Plex will work fine for a while until (randomly it seems) you chose a video to play the app will restart. This will happen over and over again. I know it’s not the server as another client will work fine.
The only fix I’ve found is to reboot the device. Then all is well until that random point is hit again.
I think that’s a separate problem… this issue is systematic. Auto playing x265 content (i.e. auto playing the next TV show in the sequence, or playing anything x265 not from it’s main page) will cause the issue, and in my case will restart the Chromecast TV. And in my case I have 4 Chromecast TV’s, so it’s driving the family nuts.
My kids can’t watch their TV shows anymore, and it’s just too much effort to convert my x265 to x264 just for the sake of this bug which will HOPEFULLY be fixed soon (??).
I notice that if I force transcoding vs directplay it fails less often, but still not dependable.
If I stream the same files with Jellyfin there are no issues.
Oh, yeah. Got myself a new Google TV few days ago to skip over the great Philips android support on the TV, and yeah. I even thought that it was Googles fault. Gave back the device, got a new one and had the same problems. Just reboots the whole device on running a new episode automatically.
Learned a new one today, Google if problem exists, if not, you are the problem.
@DaveBinM has there been any progress on this? I saw another thread where this particular device model (Chromecast with Google TV) isn’t able to see the server as online.
It sounds like this device is proving to be problematic.
From my experience with this specific bug we have found that if we do the following this doesn’t trigger the restart/lockout of the Google TV (sabrina):
- before end of episode (credits) click back button
- select next episode to start
- episode starts successfully and we are happy
whereas if we let Plex to continue to play the episode to the very end and then it automatically chooses to start the next episode for us the system locks up and restarts near 100% of the time as described by this bug (zoomed in play, click back, )
Bought a Chromecast with Google TV yesterday and immediately experienced this… I’m not impress.
I’m just chiming in that I also have this issue.
Having this issue too. I can say that it seems somewhat unstable when playing episodes directly not just auto-playing next. It does seem to be only x265, and it doesn’t happen on my sony tv with android, only the chromecast with android.
I have this issue too, has to turn off pre rolls because it was doing the same thing
I’m having the same issue. I second that it seems to only affect HEVC encoded files. Any ETA on a fix?
We’re actively investigating this, but I don’t have any further details at this time.
Thank you for taking the time to invest’ on it !
Have the same problem : on a short episode series, with autoplay on a x265 HEVC
Also got the problem on a started x265 AC 3.1 episode while I changed the audio language and subtitles
Good luck and thanks !
Thank you for investigating this! This issue has been a major pain in my house. Getting this fixed will stop my partner from yelling at me so much!
Found this to only happen with HEVC/h265 Files
Makes it seem like the File is corrupted. But when I Chromecast from my OnePlus Nord it works fine. Let’s hope the next Plex App update or Google TV update fixes this, Android TV 12 should be the next best thing for this little device or switch to the NVIDIA Shield TV hah
You can try this build if you are comfortable sideloading an APK to your device; https://artifacts.plex.tv/android-experimental/8.21.0.26669-7c1b7060/PlexForAndroid-8.21.0.26669-7c1b7060-Armv7aGooglePlayStdExo.apk
It should solve the issue with the device restarting, if you get any other playback failures please grab the logs from the device and share them with me. Information on fetching the logs is available here; Android, Android TV, Fire TV, Portal Logs | Plex Support
Thank you for posting this @sixones.
I’ve installed your build to the three CCwGTVs we have in the house. We will use in anger (lockdown will help this - LOL) for a few days and report back any issues.
For those, who like me, don’t have a keyboard handy to plug into the unit - here is a shortened link to the build posted above to easy enter via the remote.
Well with my initial testing on this new APK… it’s still broken. First attempt didn’t crash it, but the video still had the weird “zoomed in” corruption (playing a DVD resolution HVEC file). Then I went and tried again - same zoomed-in look, and this time crashed the CCwGTV.
Now that I’ve turned the logging on… I put on an episode of Walking Dead, 1080p HVEC.
I then:
- fast forwarded right to the end
- let it auto-play into the next episode
- the next episode played OK (no weird zoomed-in look)
- I hit the back button, thinking it was working OK
- CCwGTV instantly crashed after hitting the back button on the remote. Oops.

And my next attempt… again with the lower quality DVD resolution HVEC file.
I started Thin Blue Line (DVD rip, HVEC format), I then:
- fast forwarded right to the end
- let it auto-play into the next episode
- the next episode auto-played with the weird “zoomed-in” look
- I hit the back button (it worked!)
- I hit “play” on the next episode… the GGwGTV instantly crashed.
