It says - Operation failed
Trying to install plex with the SPK file using manual install in Package Center, as I have many many times before.
I’m logged in as my USERNAME with administrator privileges, but not as admin
OK, switched to admin user.
Did Q7 and checked folders per Q11
Folders volume1/@appstore/ and var/ all gone.
Left the volume1/plex
It contains many subfolders; such as
/volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server
It has all the crash reports back to 1.1.4
Package center has Plex certificate, download file checksum is correct.
But still the Operation failed error message.
So this problem came up again!
Going from 1.13.5 to 1.13.6
Did all the above and still had problems. So read through the FAQ https://forums.plex.tv/t/synology-faqs-read-this-first/274891#Q0
Found the bit about the Plex folder permissions about half way through Q18.
This resetting permissions to plex as owner and 755 for permissions I believe solved it. 1.13.6 rolled in without a problem after having installed 1.13.4 from the Syno Package Center.
I’d therefore like to suggest to the FAQ owner that Q18 be split at the ’ To correct the ownership permissions for the ‘Plex’ folder’ position and give it the focus I believe it deserves.
Or maybe move it to be part of Q7a. This is just a suggestion and thanks for the FAQ @trumpy81.
Also a few more details on which files to set to 755 or 644 as I went with all 755 as I couldn’t find any more details.
The DSM reset worked. The text in the webpage isn’t 100%
Yes, this comment is about the Synology website, I did contact them and they have corrected the text, it was about pushing the reset button, one beep, then 3 beeps. Video was correct but text wasn’t. It now is.
I do NOT recommend disabling the admin account in DSM
Totally agree with you, I still have it enabled and use it to as you describe.
Q18 on the FAQ’s page deals with file and ownership permissions for ones media files/folders and the Plex folder/files. These are separate issues from Q7a, which deals with a hidden/inaccessible Plex folder.
After doing the DSM reset twice in recent times and the problem of updating coming back. The second reset even without any added users would not let me install PMS manually, for some reason using the Package Centre it let me install (1.13.4) I then reduced the size of the database by removing all my music. Cleaned Optimized etc.
I then tried updating to 1.13.5 - failed
Went looking at the FAQ to see the second part of Q18. I then SSH into the DSM to see the volume1/Plex and it’s sub folders as it’s easy to see ownership and permissions in WinSCP.
To find many folders/subfolders and files with my USERNAME (admin group) not admin or plex usernames.
I then set them via DSM File Manger all to plex (owner) and 755 but it can clearly be seen they are 777 in the image. I didn’t take a screen shot back then but the attached shows all plex which is correct. Right?
They shouldn’t be admin or other username?
download the package using a browser other than Chrome or Safari, as these have been known to not complete the download correctly. You should also check the downloaded file’s SHA-1 checksum to ensure that you have a successful download
I use Firefox and always check the checksum to make sure the spk is the real spk. But a good reminder to anybody with problems.
Again @trumpy81 thank you for all your assistance and hope the above clarifies my previous post which I probably rushed having successfully updated to 1.13.6 late in the late evening and after many hours of trying to track the issue down.
If I ever do another DSM reset I’ll make sure all but my plex database is removed and set up manually from scratch no restoring DSM users or settings from a backup.
Edit 27/04/2019: If you have WebTools installed make sure you stop it too before any attempted update.
