QNAP QuTS Hero 5.0.0.1892
I recently moved my Plex server from a Mac to my QNAP TVS-h1688x running QuTS Hero. (This was a new install, I only moved the files, not the database/metadata). Over time, I began to notice some content was not listed on the Plex server even though the files were there and the file structure was similar to my original Mac instance. Using the Mac client or the web client does not matter (or any other client).
As far as I can tell, the problem is with series content (TV shows or episodic content), not movies. An example I have is the anime series “Tenchi Muyo Ryo-ohki!” from the 1990s. On my Mac, I had all of the seasons listed even though they were built from three different folders (depending on what kind of file type they were like MKV, MP4, etc). On the QNAP, none of the episodes list at all. Asking to rescan the folders or refresh metadata has no effect. And I have at least one more example of this I’ve noticed with another title. Any ideas on how to debug this?
Make sure you are using Plex recommended naming and organization.
You can pick aired, dvd, or absolute episode ordering from TheTVDB.com or aired ordering from themoviedb.org. See screenshots below.
You may need to Plex Dance the show after reorganizing / renaming.
/TV Shows <-- folder added to TV Show library
../Show Name (year) {tvdb-zzzzz} <-- year = show's first year. tvdb/tmdb ID is optional, but assists with matching.
..../Season xx <-- "Season" in English. Two digits for number, unless four required.
....../Show Name (year) - sXXeYY - optional episode name.ext <-- ext = mp4/mkv/etc.
Selecting Aired / DVD / Absolute Ordering
You can organize your files using either the Aired (default), DVD or Absolute order. In Plex, edit the show (not season or episode), select advanced, pick preferred organization.
OK, I figured out what is going on. The scanner is mistaking the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-ohki series for the Tenchi Muyo Universe series. So all of the episodes are being lumped into the other series as if there are two different versions/files of S01E01, not that they are two different series. I know the scanner was rewritten recently…this used to work better. I may have to take both series off the Plex folders, introduce the Ryo-Ohki series and force the proper matching.
Add the year and TVDB or TMDB ID to the folder name for each series.
Follow the Plex naming / organizing documents as closely as possible. Use the show names as they exist on TheTVDB.com
This will help Plex match the shows correctly.
Yes. Move both series out of the view of the Plex scanners, perform the Plex Dance steps, return the series to the Plex library one at a time. Wait for Plex to finish recognizing/matching the first before returning the second.
The show names did match TheTVDB.com. That’s what I’ve been using for matching for many years. Plex’s new scanner still didn’t get it right. I don’t have year designation on all series…maybe I should add them. The old scanner written in Python was dog slow but it worked magic on bad/weird file names and season/episode matching The new scanner is really fast but less tolerant on anything out of the ordinary and sometimes just ordinary things.
Add the TVDB or TMDB ID to the show folder (must use curly braces, { }). I haven’t tested it with TV shows, but with movies, the ID takes precedence over the file/folder name when matching.
Also perform the Plex Dance with both shows (remove both shows, then do the steps). That will clear out any bad matching information from the Plex database.
