I created a folder on my Synology 6 NAS and then added a TV series folder, then season 1 folder. So it looks like this. You can see the naming structure of the series and episodes. It should be totally fine with what Plex advises.
And here it is in Plex. It shows all 10 episodes and they play fine:
The second series on my NAS is set up exactly the same way.
You can see the identical naming structure and folder setup. When I scan TV folder in Plex (scan library files) it does not bring the new TV series in. The only way I got it to work was to add the folder as a brand new media, much like when I first created the TV Shows folder. Plex should just add each subsequent folder of a TV series I have added to my NAS and then I can scan library in Plex and it should bring it in. I shouldn’t have to create a brand new TV shows folder for every series I add. The navigation pane would be crazy in length with the number of series I’m going to be adding. When doing movies, I have different folders under that Folder in my NAS and when I scan library for newly added movies, Plex adds them without a problem.
What am I missing? I must be doing something wrong. I’d sure appreciate the help. I’ve been through all sorts of Plex support documents and so forth but it seems I’m doing everything right.
So lets start with the basics. The folder name and file names do not match.
If this was in my library the folder would be called Philip Marlowe, Private Eye (1983) {tvdb-75277}
NOTE: this includes both the full year, and TVDB id of the show.
as for the file names:
Philip Marlowe, Private Eye - S01E01 - The Pencil
Philip Marlowe, Private Eye - S01E02 - The King in Yellow
Philip Marlowe, Private Eye - S01E03 - Finger Man
Philip Marlowe, Private Eye - S01E04 - Nevada Gas
Philip Marlowe, Private Eye - S01E05 - Smart Aleck Kill
Philip Marlowe, Private Eye - S02E01 - Blackmailers Don't Shoot
Philip Marlowe, Private Eye - S02E02 - Spanish Blood
Philip Marlowe, Private Eye - S02E03 - Pickup on Noon Street
Philip Marlowe, Private Eye - S02E04 - Guns at Cyrano's
Philip Marlowe, Private Eye - S02E05 - Trouble Is My Business
Philip Marlowe, Private Eye - S02E06 - Red Wind
Note that I matched the show name exactly in the file names.
I would rename the files, perform the Plex Dance, and then post your server logs if that does not resolve your issue
Thank you for the reply. Where did you find the tvdb-75277? I’d appreciate a link to where I find such information for series/shows.
So my folder would be named "Philip Marlowe, Private Eye (1983) {tvdb-75277}? So if I add a third series, let’s call it Mad Men, and I have Seasons 1 and 2 to burn (I have others but just for demonstration), I would name it "Mad Men (2015) - and then find the tvdb number for the particular season, or just the show itself? And would the series still show up nicely in Plex (without all the name of the tvdb for example?)
When you say perform the Plex Dance, you just mean do the library scan as I’ve done?
So I create a folder on my NAS for each episode? I don’t see that in the Plex instructions for naming structure so I’d appreciate the clarity. So you say it should be:
TV Shows
Philip Marlowe, Private Eye
S01E01
S01E02
First to get the TVDB ID look up the series: Mad Men - TheTVDB.com which shows an ID of 80337 which means the show folder is: Mad Men (2015) {tvdb-80337} and the first episode would look like: TV Shows\Mad Men (2015) {tvdb-80337}\Season 01\Mad Men - S01E01 - Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.mkv
Edit and no the Plex Dance is not just a library scan, please see the yellow linked article, it has several steps involved and must be followed exactly.
No. With “the overall folder” I meant the folder for the whole show.
Just as @dbirch explained above:
\TV Shows <-- this folder must be added to the library in Plex
\Philip Marlowe, Private Eye (1983) {tvdb-75277}
\Season 01
Philip Marlowe, Private Eye - S01E01 - The Pencil.mkv
(Backslashes \ indicate folders)
Because the title of this series is spelt that way: Philip Marlowe, Private Eye - TheTVDB.com
The closer your folder name is to the spelling on these two websites, the better.
The TVDB-id number can be found on this very page, btw.
Awesome input! I believe I’m on my way with the TV series. I’ve successfully added hundreds of movies but am now doing some TV series and couldn’t figure out what I was doing wrong.
I did the {tvdb-#xxxx} for the other series I just tested and it came right into Plex with that and the other great input above.
If I have any further problem I’ll circle back to the forum post here. You’ve been just SO helpful. I LOVE Plex.
Just FYI: adding the TVDB or TMDB id is strictly optional.
Sticking to the proper title spelling and adding the release (year) is sufficient in 99% of the cases.
Only if you encounter a mismatch or mixup of two series which won’t get solved by the above, you need the id.
BTW, I know I should create another forum question but if I can dare ask, I started putting DVD or Blu Ray (or 4K) on some movies in the “Edition” box. I was going to add that for my edification, not for it to show on the page, but after seeing it, I went to try to delete from the Edition box but no matter what I do, it won’t go away - although it worked for one movie title but not the others I entered in Edition box. How can I get rid of the DVD or Blu Ray name in the Edition box?
Forgive me if I’ve asked within this forum, I totally understand. Thanks so much!
By the way, if a series has multiple seasons, and I create the main folder with the name of the series, under that I would put Season 01 (2002) for example? I can’t really put "The Wire (2002) as the name of the folder for the series because there are subsequent seasons underneath. I appreciate the clarity for me. Thanks!
Season folders take only the season number, nothing else.
The overall show folder only takes the (year) of the release of S01E01.
It doesn’t matter if later seasons were released at all, or if they were released in a different year than season 01.
Verify that the edition is not included in the file or folder name of this movie, like e.g. this: Apocalypse Now (1979)\Apocalypse Now (1979) - {edition-Redux}.mkv
You may have to perform a full Plex Dance, to untangle it from an existing edition.
You may also find that editions currently don’t appear in the filmography of an actor, so use them sparsely.
I could do that and probably will but I only started this and did on 10 of the movies is all so I thought I could just delete those and re-add them. I first have to upload back into my NAS and then scan the library to bring them back in. Doing the Plex Dance is probably the wise thing.
