Plex server on Synology DS916+ with Put.io through Webdav

Server Version#:1.32.7.762
Player Version#: various (android TV, web, windows app – not relevant here)

Hello there,

I have a Synology DS916+ that has been running Plex server for quite a long time now, all working smooth & well. I came recently across davfs2, which allows mounting remote WebDAV servers as you would do with any SMB or CIFS resource. It works pretty well, you just have to fiddle a bit through ipkg and terminal to download, build and install the necessary stuff.

With that set up, I mounted a put.io repository using mount.davfs, and from a terminal I’m now able to access my put.io documents & resources through the folder /mnt/putio on my nas.

I then tried to add some specific folders from the mount on the Plex server running on the DS916, and while it didn’t raise any error, it didn’t see anything on the mount neither. So any movie/tv show present on the added folder from the mount won’t show up in the Plex libraries, although they’re visible (but not playable) when accessing the resources through the folder view.

Any idea where the issues might be? I’m going to try to replicate the setup (plex server, davfs mount and add media from the mount to the library) on another machine running Ubuntu or Fedora, just to confirm it’s a Plex issue or not. But meanwhile, in case you tried something like that and it worked, please point me to a possible resolution of the problem.

Thanks a lot in advance

Small note: maybe you might be tempted to reply that WebDAV is not the way to go and that I should use rClone to access my put.io content from Plex. Please know I’ve tried before, and it did not meet my needs. Additionnally, it messed up my NAS to a point where I had to completely reset it (hopefully all that was important was properly backed up, but it was so painful and long to restore everything as it was to never daunt to try the rClone experience ever again).

I would not use /mnt/putio as the mount point with DSM.

The reason for this is you can’t assign privileges to applications/users for /mnt.
While they might be visible to you , under your username, but not to other UID/GIDs (Plex)

DSM only allows you to assign privileges to things in shared folders.

Therefore:

  1. Create a shared folder /volume1/putio
  2. Configure your putio to be available there
  3. Control Panel - Shared Folders → Permissions
    – Now give Plex/PlexMediaServer access to the putio shared folder
(Apply to this folder, subfolders, and files) as well.

Superb! Thanks a million, it worked, I can now see all my files in Plex.

However I can’t play them since I get the “This server is not powerful enough to convert video” error for every single file hosted on putio. The strange thing is that I’ve disabled transcoding in the server settings. Any idea if there’s a solution for that, too?

Thanks in advance

I will definitely need to see the log files to understand what’s happening.
