PLEX Server Package on Synology NAS not keeping settings between updates

Server Version# 1.22.2.4282
Player Version#: 1.30.1.2115-81e1fc3f

Hi, I have noticed this each time I update the PLEX Server package on my Synology NAS which is a DS-920+.

Via the WEB-UI under Libraries I select to scan my library automatically, and run a partial scan when changes are detected, maybe I do not need ot check both, but I do. I then save changes, I then go to network, and in the List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth section I put in my range and SAVE.

So, all is good until the next update, whereby all the changes are deselected and the list of IP addresses no longer is there, so I have to do it all again.

WHY…is the PLEX Synology NAS package not saving the settings between updates.

I DO NOT have this issue with the iMac or the Mac Mini M1, those settings remain between updates.

Anyone else having this issue, and of so, were you able to rectify it.

Do you place media in the Plex shared folder ?

Hi, thanks for responding, I’m not sure exactly what you mean here. The way I use PLEX is that I have the bulk of my shows / movies stored on the Synology, with some on the Mac Mini for other uses. I have the PLEX server installed on the Synology and the Mac Mini with both always running. I set them both up exactly the same way, and as I said, the Mac Mini retains the settings, the Synology does not.

Where is your media stored on the Synology NAS?

When you install Plex Media Server on a Synology NAS running DSM 6, the installation process creates a /Plex shared folder.

That folder is reserved for use by Plex Media Server. You must not place any media in that folder, otherwise Plex Media Server on the Synology NAS may (will) fail to function correctly (it is OK to use /Plex if the NAS is running DSM 7)

If you have media in that folder, you must move it to another location.

See Installation & Setup of Plex Media Server on Synology and Synology FAQ (DSM 5 & 6) - Questions, Answers, and a few How-To’s for additional details.

OK, got it, no, no files stored in the Plex Shared Folder as per the request in the folder. which states do not put media files here, so none are there…my Synology is structured with all media files stored in the Shares Folders created by me on the Synology.

The list of allowed networks is stored in /Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml. Example: allowedNetworks="192.168.1.0/24"

The setting is also captured in Plex Media Server.log:

Apr 07, 2021 23:09:00.208 [0x7f64de88f700] DEBUG - Request: [192.168.1.126:62471 (Subnet)] OPTIONS /:/prefs?allowedNetworks=192.168.1.0%2F24 (16 live) TLS GZIP Signed-in Token ()
Apr 07, 2021 23:09:00.208 [0x7f65305bb700] DEBUG - Completed: [192.168.1.126:62471] 200 OPTIONS /:/prefs?allowedNetworks=192.168.1.0%2F24 (16 live) TLS GZIP 0ms 376 bytes (pipelined: 17)

A couple of suggestions:

  1. After adding the list of addresses/networks in Settings → Network, check Preferences.xml and make sure the settings are in the file.

  2. Check the logs and make sure the setting completed correctly. If it did not there should be an error message.

OK, will give it a shot. It is not critical to me but would like to know what is going on. I usually just get in the habit now of checking those boxes are ticked after an update, and of the IP list carried over.

Thank you both for the help anyway.
