Hello all,
I am having trouble with setting up remote access on my Plex server. I do not know much about networking so advice would be greatly appreciated.
What happens is that my server will say that it is connected and then after a while, it will say that it is not connected. After a while, if I click retry, it will successfully connect but will drop back after a while.
I think where my problem may stem is from the fact that my computer hosting the server is connected to a router which is in Access Point mode. This router is then connected to a different router via ethernet on the other side of the house and this router is connected to the internet.
The description of the Access Point mode on this router states that “the DHCP-assigned IP address changes” which seems like it would mess up the server.
My questions are as follows:
Is there a way to get this server up and running of this router running in Access Point mode
If the answer to the last question is yes, how would I go about doing it
If I need to manually set up the port forwarding, should I go about doing that on the one I am directly connected to or the one connected to the internet?
Just a technical question here: there are some wireless devices and wired devices on the first router. Will they still be able to function in Bridge mode?
My PMS is set up the same way yours is. Connected to an Access point which is connected to the main router. I have no issues with remote connections.
You should make sure your PMS computer has a static IP address. Just assign it within the Windows network adapter settings.
I would and do set up port forwarding manually in the main router. There is no need in the Access Point. You shouldn’t even be able to.
Hmm. I think I did this right but it does not seem to be working. Here are the steps I took:
I set my pc to have a static IP in the settings
I gave my computer a static IP in the router config
I setup my portforwarding to have a TCP service type, an external range of 50000-50000, an internal of 32400-32400 and used my pcs ip as the ip I am forwarding to.
I then manually specified the public port on my remote access settings as 50000.
As soon as I retry, remote access will be live for a second and then will display “Not available outisde your network”
This is not necessary. Just set the IP in Windows. Did you give it the same IP?
Use 32400 for both Internal and External port ranges. Let PMS use the default 32400. I use TCP/UDP but I don’t think it’s necessary.
Don’t make it any more complicated than it has to be. At least until we get it working right.
It seems to be working a little bit better now. It stays connected for a little bit longer before it fails. All I did was to unassign the IP address on my router and just keep the static IP setup in Windows. I also changed the external port to 32400 and if it crashes, I can hit retry and it will show that it is fully accessible.
Though I did try to access my server on my phone while it was saying it was not available. I disconnected my phone from my wifi and connected to data and it seems to be able to see my files on my server even though Plex says it is not available and trying the IP on canyouseeme.org returns a timeout error.
I was trying it on my media server. Is that the way I was supposed to do that? I just tried to connect to my server using the Plex app and I was able to play a tv show over it.
Not sure - my cable modem came from my isp and was set up as a wireless router - but it goes directly to my linksys router which provides my wireless connectivity. I didn’t know the cable modem even had wireless router capabilities setup by default, but I really didn’t care because setting it to bridge mode ensured my linksys was handling all our wireless needs.
I don’t know why the Plex Server is showing that it can’t connect when you obviously can.
Is it showing the same IP for External as your router or canuseeme does?
