So I installed Plex and then realised I needed the Server to cast local files. I installed this and went back to the URL and again there is the button there asking me to download Server if I want to choose local files. I HAVE installed it, but launching it does nothing and Plex itself seems to think it isn’t installed. What’s going on? Windows 10.
Plex Media Server runs in the background. You don’t see anything when you launch it. Check your system try to see if you see the Plex icon running. Right click on it then pick “Open Plex”. That should open the local Plex Web that can allow you to set it up.
Thanks, but even when it’s running in the system tray and I launch it in the browser, when I go to the big + button to find my libraries, it just shows the button to download the server installation file again. Done it twice now.
Did you install and uninstall PMS previously? Uninstalling PMS does not remove your server configuration so it may be linked to a different Plex account so you won’t get the option to configure it. Try the steps in Why am I locked out of Server Settings and how do I get in? | Plex Support.
Hi, on principle I refuse to start messing about in my registry to fix issues the developer could have handled by making good software to begin with. This is an absolute joke when other things work fine out of the box. Thanks for your attempted help anyway.
The software is doing exactly as intended. Plex Media Server settings are saved in the registry so that you can uninstall and reinstall different versions of PMS if needed without having to setup your entire server again. If you previously setup PMS, then your previous account information got saved there. If you don’t want to edit the registry, then you can do this.
- open Plex Web, sign out if you are already signed in
- sign in with your old account
- go to settings \ your server \ general
- click sign out
- sign out of Plex Web
- sign back in with your new account
- goto the same settings
- claim server
