Plex Won't recognize my server

Hello
I have accessed plex via my web browser and have downloaded the windows app. When selecting to add my own media, it prompted me to download plex media server. This was downloaded and installed. Next I go back to the page and it still prompts me to download plex media server. A second attempt to install confirmed that this was already installed and gave me the option to either repair or uninstall. Opening plex media server or plex app results in an endless cycle of prompting me to download the server. How do I get plex to recognize my server is already installed?

I am running into the same issue and while the published solution looks good and makes perfect sense to me, there is no PlexOnlineHome entry in my registry. I have tried deleting the other entries (after making appropriate Registry backups), but this did nothing useful. I still cannot see my original server and none of my local media can be seen/added. My server must be running, because I can still be accessed by outside devices via the client with no apparent differences. Also if I add media to the appropriate places on my drive, it is accessible via the client.

If any more details would be helpful,. please let me know.

Are you sure that you are accessing the right part of your registry?
Plex runs in the user context. If for some reason Plex is started under a different Windows user account, it stores its settings in a different registry branch.

It also may be, that you have several plex.tv accounts and the username you are currently using in your web browser is not the same that your server uses.

I am pretty certain that I am in the right context (thanks for listing the entire “path”, by the way).

I did manage to resolve the issue, but I am not sure if this is a “recommended” procedure, so please feel free to delete this message so that no one else will attempt it or it reveals an unexpected vulnerability.

How I did it (with the 3 registry entries deleted):

I was pretty certain of the email I used to create the server, but just in case, I tried under another (very old) email, and, as expected, the creds didn’t work. I tried “forgot password” and when the “reset” email didn’t arrive, on a hunch I clicked the “back” button on my browser. My desired server showed up immediately (showing the email that I was pretty sure about) as I was used to seeing it, but with the message stating that this server was unclaimed. I clicked the “Claim” button and it re-logged-in.

I haven’t tested thoroughly yet, but it appears that this took care of my issues.

Thank you for all of your help.

OK, I have run into an issue with my solution

When I click Home from my screen, It goes to a home page with only “Plex Content”, i.e. none of my personal media. clicking the “Plex” button in the left-side menu section does display all of the familiar server icons, but clicking on any of the buttons for my personal media like “Movies” gives an error message “There was an unexpected error loading this library”, even though the media was visible and accessible before clicking the “Home” button.

Is this something you have a quick answer for, or should I spin through the fora to find a general “error loading library” solution?

Your server now has a different “identity”, so you need to reset your plex apps and pick a new “default server”:

OttoKerner,

I appreciate the pointers to the steps for re-arranging my interface, but I am reasonably familiar with how to do that. My concern is that when I open my server, I cannot see any of my personal media (to edit posters and the like)and receive the “There was an unexpected error loading this library” message when I click on any of the media buttons (Movies, TV, Music, Photos, etc.)

Yes, but you also tell me that you can reach your media when you click on MORE in the left side bar.
So the procedure I linked is the correct one. Please try it.
