I have a few items (a movie and an album) which cause Plex media search to spin forever, so I did the Plex dance. For the past two days I have been unable to find any media files through Plex. My server has been active nonstop, and I can still access my server files directly. I’m assuming that Plex is rebuilding the database, and that I simply need to wait? Any advice?
DSM 6 or 7?
Plex Media Server version? 1.32.x, 1.40.y, etc.
Please show how you have the files named and organized. Include the full path to the files and their extension. A directory listing, screen shot from File Station, etc. See example below.
If the Plex scanners/agents cannot communicate with plex.tv, it will be difficult to correctly recognize new media.
- Verify the NAS has a reliable network connection: IP address & mask, default gateway.
- Instead of the ISP’s DNS, try using a public DNS server such as 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare); 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 (Google), or 9.9.9.9 (Quad9).
- Synchronize the NAS with a public NTP server via Control Panel → Regional Options.
TV show example:
DSM 7.2.1-69057 Update 5
Plex Media Server 1.31.0.6654-7000
I’ve tried installing updated versions on my Synology DS218 but no current versions are accepted.
Files are formatted correctly and using the same formatting example you provided. I use TMM for all files.
Until I did the Plex Dance, my server was connecting fine and I have had no issues for over a year. So I’m wondering if by deleting library data I reset something.
My server is online. Plex does not detect it.
What exactly did you perform the Plex Dance on? Did you do it on specific items, or on your entire library?
Do not update. 1.40+ introduced many database changes. Updating now, while the server is not functioning correctly, could cause additional issues.
Did you delete something manually or are you referring to the Plex Dance?
Point a browser at the IP address of the NAS: https://syno_ip_address:32400/identity.
For example, if the IP address of the NAS is 10.1.2.3, use https://10.1.2.3:32400/identity.
You should see a line of XML containing either “claimed = 0” (unclaimed) or “claimed = 1” (claimed).
Do you receive a response from the server? If so, is it claimed or unclaimed?
Can you access Plex Server settings using the local IP address, http://syno_ip_address:32400/web?
If so:
- Stop Plex Media Server and wait 30 seconds.
- Start Plex Media Server and wait 3 minutes (to log the startup sequence).
- Retrieve a set of log files (Settings → Troubleshooting) and upload the zip file to the thread.
If you cannot reach server settings, then please do the following:
- Stop Plex Media Server and wait 30 seconds.
- Start Plex Media Server and wait 3 minutes (to log the startup sequence).
- Stop Plex Media Server.
- Using Synology File Station, navigate to the Plex Data Folder. Right click on the Logs directory and compress to Logs.zip. Download the zip file, then upload to the thread.
I did it specifically for movies and TV shows. I could not complete all steps because in the process, the database ceased to be found.
I looked at your account.
Your server hasn’t talked to Plex.tv for some 15 hours.
At this point, which will also resolve you not being able to see it, is to re-attach (re-claim) it.
My suggestion is simple:
- Uninstall the package you have now, use the KEEP (first button) option
- Now REINSTALL the same SPK file again. There is no reason to change yet.
– HOWEVER –
– Use the ‘Plex Claim Token’ installation option
– AND – Get the the claim token from Plex.tv - When that’s done, tell me what you see .(if you get everything back)
Thank you. I’ve followed all instructions, added claim token, etc. Here is what I see.
Installed version: 1.29.2.6364-7000
Newest version: 1.29.2.6364-7000
I waited over 30 minutes, opened Plex app, which still shows,
No content available
Check your network connection and verify that any media servers are online.
Let’s see what’s going on.
-
When you did that install with the claim token, Did it show your username and say it was claimed to you ??
-
Using FileStation, navigate to:
PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server -
Right-click ‘Logs’ → ‘Compress to Logs.zip’
-
Download that from the syno
-
Upload/attach that here.
- Yes
- see attached. thank you.
Logs.zip (4.8 MB)
Finding a couple odd things in your logs.
Does this make sense? (player abruptly disconnected)

I see a lot of “Relay” connections. This is telling me there’s a firewall somewhere. Are you using the Syno built-in firewall ?
Hmm, not certain. I have a VPN, but it is not always active, nor was it active at the time of the logs.
Go into Control Panel - Security.
If the Synology firewall is ON, you can decide if you want it off.
(Remember, you’re already protected from the internet by your modem/router firewall)
Please let me know what you find.
It was not on. Perhaps it is a different issue?
going back to the beginning…
Tell me where it fails in this sequence?
- Your server shows up
- You have Library sections
- When you open a library section, you see movies / series
- As you click into a movie / series, you see the poster(s) and metadata (text)
- For series, you see seasons & episodes in those seasons.
None of the above, or I could say it fails before #1. My server never shows up.
Once Plex launches, I receive an error stating server is unavailable. I cannot see my content.
All of this began once I attempted the plex dance.
Tell me what you define (what did you do) and what did you PlexDance…
(from where – to where)
I think you had your media in the wrong place and , in the process, made it worse.
For you and the server to be on the same LAN and you not to be able to access it is a fundamental problem with the network.
Also, how the heck did it get claimed and how are you able to talk to the Syno?
This is what I followed from another forum:
Try the Plex dance™ for the file:
Move the folders/files for the media somewhere else on your computer.
Click the three dots next to the library name on the left menu > “Scan Library Files”.
Click the three dots next to “Libraries” on the left sidebar > “Empty Trash”.
Click the three dots next to “Libraries” on the left sidebar > “Clean Bundles”.
Move the folders/files back to your media folder.
Click the three dots next to the library name on the left menu > “Scan Library Files”.
I did this separately for Movies and TV Shows, and got up to Clean Bundles, at which point the system crashed into its current state.
I believe my file tree is set up correctly. Of the folders below, “Review” is not a Plex folder.
All folders and files are properly formatted using Tiny Media Manager:
I do not know what the disconnect is. But I had no problem clicking to get the claim code when reinstalling Plex on Syno, then adding the code to Syno.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks again for all your support!
It’s behaving now?
All media back in as expected ?
