Plex Skipping forward by a few seconds on Web Player

Interestingly enough, I am having this same exact issue on Firefox. Not sure if its just Chromium based, but I will definitely try the fix next week. Thank you for working on this issue!

Thanks for the update!!

I can confirm the skips seen in the two 60 second test clips are causing the issue here, and indeed this is the problem that I have been complaining about here.
what I was complaining about in this thread. I see it if I playback at Origional Quality. Origional quality will direct stream it and I see the skips. I do not see the skips when I pick any other quality in the web client. I tested 20/10/4/2/1.5/.3 mbps and they all worked correctly. All these other quality options let to hw assisted decode and encode, and avoided the issue.

I have this stuttering issue as well, but not only does it do it on Windows in Chrome and Chromium edge, but it’s also doing it when using Chromecast either started from browser Or via my phone (ios).

I’ve resorted to using VLC and it’s janky casting abilities.

Hey @brandons20909_gmail_com if you can share a sample that reproduces the behavior in Firefox I’ll be happy to add it to the test set.

Just sharing a heads up that the workaround mentioned above is now available at https://app.plex.tv/. The Plex Web version bundled with Plex Media Server (PMS) will receive the workaround in a future PMS release.

  • Visit https://app.plex.tv/
  • Click on the Settings icon in the Plex Web header
  • Click Show Advance within the Settings view
  • Click on Debug within the Settings view left-side bar
  • Within the settings view you’ll see a Use alternate streaming protocol for video playback checkbox
  • Check that checkbox, save settings

Folks with the issue seeing an improved behavior using the workaround?

Yes, it works flawless now with my testvideo.
Thank you very much!

That workaround doesnt work for me. Still jumping around every few seconds…

So far so good on FireFox, seemed to fix the issue, although I have only been using it on LAN. Sorry I couldn’t get a video either, it seemed everytime I went through the process I couldn’t get it to do it sadly.

So why did this take so long before being addressed or even acknowledged?

I can confirm that this test player resolves the skipping ahead problem in chrome, however there is a new issue. It consistantly crashes 2 seconds from the end of your clips. The playback stops and I get a spinning cursor that doesnt stop.

The workaround didn’t work for me neither. Using Plex on Chrome on local network.

I was facing this problem in linux, so I’ve disabled the hardware acceleration in Chromium, and the problem disappeared.

@jd443, @ebeloin please provide more information. Realistically we’re going to need a sample clip that reproduces the problem. Please see these instructions: https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201035968-Generating-Sample-Files-from-Media

@mervincm breaking my heart! This behavior is something unique to Direct Stream that we can work around. Thanks for the heads up; I’ll look into it next week.

Hi, just joining this thread because I am also experiencing this issue with Chrome. While I have found that the added option does fix skipping for me, I continue to have general mkv playback issues with Chrome high-bitrate movies. Load times can be extremely long, and sometimes the files will fail to load at all, while the same files play fine directly via VLC, and in Firefox. Moving within a playing file also can cause the Chrome playback to halt completely. These additional problems were present before and after the recently-added fix. In addition, I cannot see any correlation between files, some have issues some don’t, even ones I digitized on the same day with the same software.

I am using the following:
Windows 10 Pro Version 1909 build 18363.836
Plex Media Server 1.19.3.2852 with Plex Web 4.34.2
Firefox 76.0.1 (64-bit) - no issues, using secure https or unsecure http
Chrome 81.0.4044.138 (Official Build) (64-bit) - skipping (fixed); sometimes no playback, secure or unsecure

Media files reside on a non-raid NAS; PC and NAS both wired.

I found an additional issue. With the new Chrome setting enabled, Chrome fails in playback of a high bitrate 4k movie after about 30 seconds. If I disable the alternate stream workaround it plays correctly. It fails consistantly with an error "play back error and error occured trying to play ā€œ1917ā€ Error code:h3 (decode) [RETRY]

mattseeley This fixes the skipping issue me. It has been happening for months with random videos. Thank you!

What’s the bitrate for that video?

Bitrate 74451 kbps

I can confirm I no longer get skipping when using this new fix. Tested on 5 files that were skipping beforehand.
