Plex Stops Working After New Update

Server Version#: DS1520+
Player Version#:

I’m new to the entire Synology NAS world. I wanted to have a single place to store all my movies, music etc. My server was working fine before the most recent update yesterday (10/16/20). Now, my Plex Media Server won’t stay connected. Every time I click ‘Run’, it will run for 5 mins then stop. I have 2 issues:

  1. I have over 800+ movies and shows showing up on my Plex main screen but when I go into my Synology NAS to see where all my files are stored, there’s only 125 movies showing up (the ones I most recently added). Where are all my other movies and shows? Also, when I placed my movies on my NAS Plex, all of a sudden, they’re gone from my external.

  2. I’m thinking of uninstalling and reinstalling Plex Media Server, but I’m afraid of loosing all my media. How can I download all my media to back it up onto my external without loosing my media?

I hope I was clear in explaining myself.

Thanks,
EJ

You should be able to see/find/copy all your movies etc from your PC as your NAS is, by definition, a network accessible storage device.

…I am not on Windows, but go to your file manager, then select your network and you should be able to see everything from there (and copy it).

I don’t think uninstalling Plex will have any effect on your media (I.e. will not delete it).

What do you mean ‘go to your file manager, then select your network’? What network are you referring to? My NAS? I’m sorry, I’m very new to all this.

It’s the weirdest thing! When I go to my Plex on my NAS, I only have 145 movies listed. But when I run the Plex Media Server (it now only runs for 5 mins then stops), I see 825 movies but they’re not listed in the Plex Media Server app. What do you think it could be?

Are you on Windows?

this doesn’t make sense to me. Is PMS running on your Synology?

  • What do you mean when you write “when I go to Plex on my NAS”?
  • what do you mean when you write “When I run “Plex media server””? …PMS should always be running.

Can you be precise about which app you are using on what machine to do what function?

I don’t think I’m running a PMS. If I need one, which do you suggest?

When I ‘run’ the Plex Media Server app in my Synology NAS, it will run for 5 mins. When running, I’m able to view all my 825 movies and tv shows. But when the Plex Media Server app automatically stops running, then my media library vanishes from my Plex main screen and I get an error of “The server “DS1520plus” does not allow secure connections”.

I’m not sure how to fix this.

PMS stands for Plex Media Server

Thank you! Again, I’m so new to this so please forgive me if I don’t know too many tech terms… :slightly_smiling_face:

I apologize, Yes, I’m running a Windows computer.

go here. with your browser.
You should see something like this…

Click on the tool icon (top right hand corner)

which takes you here…

Click on Network to get here…

Change Secure Connections to “preferred” and try again.

not necessary

OK. and is PMS running on your Synology or also on your Windows PC?

When you access Plex from your Windows PC, are you using the “Plex for Windows” app?

[edit: typos and clarity]

I’ve tried that and it was already checked. I disable and rechecked the box but to no good. I feel as though it’s my Synology NAS bc the PMS app keeps automatically stopping in Package Center after about 3-5 mins. Any other suggestion of what it could be?

What version of PMS are you trying to run?
What version of the Synology OS are you on?

Doesn’t Windows have a “file manager” that you can run where you can see all your files? This app should show you all your media on your Synology as well.

not a clue as I have a QNAP, but I would check your Synology OS is up to date and that you are running the latest (non beta) version off PMS as downloaded from plex.tv (and nowhere else).

My OS is 6.2.3-25426 and my PMS version is 1.20.3.3437. I just installed this update yesterday. How can you tell whether something is running beta? I downloaded it from the Plex link the app gave me.

That benign looking switch called “Plex Pass Downloads” which you think is special because you paid is a misnomer. It should read “Danger - never switch this on” or “Beta version” …take your pick.

OK, you are up-to-date. I’m afraid I cannot help you any further - you need someone that knows about Synology.

I kinda figured that. Thank you, I appreciate your help! Take care! :slightly_smiling_face:

good luck!
