Plex sucks!

I have had the same issues with plex on every device I own, android tablet, android phone, Android TV Box, windows and apple.
Plex became so unreliable that it was no longer useful to me.
I brought these issues up on multiple forms to end.
I have stopped using plex and have switched to emby… no more such problems for me.
I still have my lifetime plex pass (waste of money now) so I hit the plex fourms now and then to see if they have started fixing the issues plaguing the platform.

What issues might that be?

remote access don’t work and when it works is only for 15 minutes and it disconnects, use to be very reliable!. I been updating my devices with the new updates, still the same.

I have two Plex servers in my house and the remote access has always worked fine. I’ve got a decent consumer router/access point and keep my network fairly simple. My Tablo and Channels DVR are also accessible outside my network.

If switching to Emby has fixed your problem - awesome! I’ve got a test Emby server spun up in a VM and it seems to work well. I do have a problem ‘shifting gears’ between the different approaches that Plex vs. Emby has. How have you found that? It’s just been unexplainably jarring for me. Don’t know why.

Looks like it might be time to take a look at that remote access and do some troubleshooting.
Not sure this post is solely to vent or if you’re looking for help.

If you’re looking to get it fixed… let us know.
We could start with some basics as to how you’ve configured that remote access in the first place…

  • IP reservation for the machine hosting the Plex Media Server?
  • UPnP vs. manual port forward on your router?
  • any firewalls… that might interfere?
  • anything fancy about your network (e.g. double NAT, subnets, VPN…)?
  • can you reach your router from outside your home network using the port used by Plex (32400 or whatever port you configured in a manual port forward) – you can verify this e.g. using canyouseeme.org
  • when you say it “disconnects”… do you refer to the remote access status indicator or an actual playback being disrupted?

Considering it seems to work occasionally, it shouldn’t be a severe issue like your ISP blocking that traffic.

Well… from what I can see you haven’t in this forum – or at least not using that user account.
Not sure if you specifically created that one to vent as it’s only been active for about an hour and so far this has been your only post.

Sorry you feel this way…
From my own experience I cannot confirm this

Hey Tomdny what isp are you using? What up and down speeds do you have? Have you configured your modem/router for plex. I’ve had that problem temporarily early on when using plex but in every instance the problem was either rooted in the remote settings on plex or the hardware internet hardware it went through (modem and/or router) but since that time having had 1/2 dozen ISP’s and about the same number of completely different plex setups, haven’t had that problem in years.

I think instead of blaming plex, check if your network is running properly. One thing I will say, I use manual port forward and never had a problem. Only annoying part is getting tautulli every now and then give me false positives and fixed it by removing the notification so.

Haven’t tried emby to say good or bad.

Atleast you get responses. Mods seem more responsive here with either negative/venting posts or they especially love it when you post in the wrong section. That seems like christmas day for them. my ex needed some form of drama to thrive aswell xo

Plex by far, does not suck. Sure some areas need some improvements.

I’ve been using them for years. It’s one component in my home that is the most stable.

I think your problems are outside or Plex, or possibly the hardware you’re using.

I concur with OP.
Plex has been unreliable lately especially with remote access. Disconnecting after sometime for last 2-3 weeks. I have manual port specified, have latest firmware where they fixed remote access issue. I updated, my router, my NAS. Still the issues remains. Anyway, if someone does not have problem does not mean that there is no issue.

I think the problem with Remote Access nowadays is that ISPs tend to save on IPv4 addresses and tunnel it via IPv6, which doesn’t allow for Servers or open ports
