I bought a Hisense ES-A190417-1 smart TV a couple of months ago.
Will this model continue to be supported?
When the announcement says that ‘support will stop at the end of September’, does this mean I will be able to continue using Plex unsupported or does it mean I will no longer be able to access my Plex server at all.
I notice I get updates to the firmware on my TV, does that mean they will be able to upgrade their modem connection?
Here is the official announcement Plex support is ending 2020-09-30 on older smart TV devices
It details information about the affected devices.
Support for the old (and long since cracked[!]) encryption protocol TLS 1.0 will be removed from the plex.tv cloud servers.
Which means that any device or software trying to contact plex.tv will fail to do so, if it only “speaks” this old, unsecure protocol and not one of the newer protocols.
For a pure “client” device like a TV set, this means it will no longer be able to sign into your plex account.
Which in turn means it won’t be able to communicate with
- remote Plex servers in general
- your own server, if it requires authentication
- depending on the client software, it might not even be able to find the server, resulting in a total loss of Plex functionality
(Unfortunately, I don’t know the Tizen Plex client, so I don’t know if this is case with your device)
There is nothing that can be done about 1)
You can mitigate the effects of 2) a little bit, if you sign out your own server from your plex.tv account.
The downside is of course the loss of all Plex Pass features on your server, as well as the loss of remote access and potentially the inability of other Plex client types to reach your server.
There is also an option to not require authentication from certain IP addresses in the local network https://support.plex.tv/articles/200430283-network/ " List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth"
If 3) is the case, you can only retrofit a “Plug-In Plex client”, like a
Google Chromecast, Roku Express, or Amazon Fire TV Stick.
Or add an Apple TV or nVidia Shield, if you are looking for a higher-end client.
The latter, in its “Pro” variety, will be able to replace and update all “smart” functionality of your TV. So there is no need to replace the TV if you’re still satisfied with the picture quality.
Many thanks for your swift reply.
As I said - “I notice I get updates to the firmware on my TV, does that mean they will be able to upgrade their modem secure connection?”
The announcement talked about older Hisense models. How can I find out whether my model is a newer model or not.
Whether Hisense has retrofitted a newer version of TLS into the firmware, I don’t know.
It would be beneficial for you, but there is no way to find out, except if there are release notes for the firmware.
Sorry, I don’t have more detail information than that.
If they had updated their firmware, would Plex see this and access the servers automatically or will there be a blanket ban on Hisense TV’s.
What test does Plex do to identify the newer models it refers to in the announcement?
Thanks again Otto
then it would work as before.
It doesn’t. It will either work or not. The assumption is that older models simply don’t get firmware updates, so they never gain support for the newer, secure protocols.
Encryption usually requires hardware support, because the CPU in such devices is usually too weak to perform the encryption in software. (or if it does, it won’t achieve a throughput that is high enough for video bandwidths)
So even if new firmare is available, it might not be able to retrofit support for newer encryption protocols.
That’s great Otto. Many thanks once again.
I guess I will have to wait and see now.
I literally bought a Hisense 85S8 2020 model yesterday and used the Plex app - and it worked surprisingly well.
Today obviously, it no longer works (being October 1).
I have tried the options above - signed out the server, and then tried to get the Hisense Plex app to connect to the server directly using IP - but i simply get an error saying the host is unreachable or offline.
Any suggestions before i break something?
Plex said what they were going to do and why.
The problem appears to be with Hisense who won’t respond to this.
I think the TV’s simply won’t be able to do what Plex needs.
Interestingly i’ve discovered the Hisense plex app is a wrapper around ‘https://plex.tv/web/tv/opera’
If you go to that URL, it looks identical to the Hisense app - and even reports the same version number - and, identically, now fails since 30 Sept.
It is therefore incorrect to say this is Hisense’s fault. Surely since the URL above is a plex site, plex can fix this ‘opera’ version so that it can communicate via TLS 1.2?
The site LIVES on the Plex server - i don’t understand how Plex can’t fix this.
hi - new here - not sure if you can help or if this is the right topic, i have a panasonic tv which since yesterday is now playing movies etc in the top left 2/3 of the screen - the controls are still along the bottom but the image is much reduced!
At the same time we now have a new blue arrow mouse controller that we never had before and dont much like… i can find no elipse settings option to return the screen size or manage any settings
could this be related to the recent changes on 30/sep?
not far off ditching plex and heading for a dedicated pc to tv alternative - any suggestions on how i can fix this?
Works fine for me on my lap top.
Can someone please tell me What Hisense models are being discontinued… Bought one this year and now the plex app can connect to my Pc. The model number of the TV I have is 50B7100UW can someone let me know if support has been discontinued. Been having an issue for more than 2 days though
We tried opening our Plex app on a (not-so-old) Vizio TV yesterday and got a white screen stating 301- Moved Permanently. Is this a similar issue?
The old Vizio “Presto” platform is affected as well, yes.
Newer Vizio models however are still supported.
Thanks. How do I verify what platform my Vizio TV has?
I have several older amazon Fire TV sticks that no longer connect to my remote Plex library. Although it’s not outlined in their official announcement, does this mean it’s not working for them either? I can’t find any other posts about it. I can connect to remote library with xbox and ios.
Works again on my 2020 Hisense! Amazing!! THANKYOU PLEX
“Works again on my 2020 Hisense! Amazing!! THANKYOU PLEX”
What did Plex do?
I am thinking of purchasing a Chromecast.
Can anyone from Plex let me know you you support this product please?
